I bought a used Bogen 3036 at KEH. The tripod is heavy, tall and built like a tank. It is heavy, exceptionally stable and could lift my pick up truck. It's not made to climb mountains and cross rivers but when I drag it out into my back yard or take it out of the back seat of my truck or untie it from the rack on my 4 Wheeler it works great. The tripod was inexpensive and the low cost allowed me to purchase a Sirui T-025X for the times I needed more portability. I really believe we all need two tripods because an all purpose option does not exist.

Welcome from someone who has empathy for your Cubs. We Red Sox fans can relate to the joy.

To simply respond to the question: 24-70mm 2.8.

Yes. I agree.

I bought a Sigma 24-70 2.8 and never intended to leave it on my camera. However, without any planning it is always on my camera.

Welcome from New Hampshire. I did the same thing at the same age exactly 14 months ago. This is great.

Welcome. I retired 14 months ago and thought I would have time for more photography. Problem is; it seems I am involved with more activities and find I have to structure my time carefully. People who worry about finding something to do when they retire are way off base. Have fun.

I had the same decision to make 4 or 5 years ago when I got back into photography. Whichever way you go you will be spending a significant amount of money on lenses. Once you go down that road you are likely locked in to that brand of camera. So take your time and choose carefully. Beyond the original kit lens I now own 3 primes and 3 zooms for a total of 7 lenses. My original film camera days were with Canon. A respected friend recommended Nikon. I borrowed his Nikon D 90; liked it and eventually bought a Nikon D 7000. I don't believe Nikon is better then Canon but I simply made the best decision for me at the time. I am now looking to upgrade to a new camera and because of the lens purchases am looking at a Nikon D 500.
Take your time.

When I introduced a new dog to my Dad he often named it "Sooner" because he said it would sooner crap on the floor than to go outside.

I recently bought a used Sigma 24-70 for my Nikon D 7000 because I did not have the inclination to spend the big bucks on a Nikon lens. I love the quality of the photographs it produces and not use it for most applications including landscape. I suggest you try KEH camera, if you don't like it send it back. I also have a 12-24 if I need a wider view.

Just a thought. Good luck.

Any ideas on the best type of lens to use for landscape photography?

I have an 18-270 zoom and just rented a 24-70L IS II but feel that one is way too expensive for my needs.

Not sure I would be better off with a zoom or fixed length.

I look forward to our trip to Norwalk for the summit nhra nationals. The past few years I have used my Nixon p520. This year in using my Sony a3000. I didn't think the kit 18-55 and my 60mm would get me close enough when I wanted, so I went and bought a Sony 55-210 zoom. All the reviews I saw were positive.

I had to take a picture of this shirt I spotted at the New England Nationals in Epping NH last month. Thought you might like it.

The best lens to buy is the one you already have. I was not a big fan of Sigma years ago, but since they have released their newer versions, I have found them to be quite good as well as reasonably priced. While I do own the Nikon trinity, and all are great lenses, so are your three. I also have a Sigma 150-600 Sport lens and find it to be a great value. Not as good as my Nikon 400/2.8, but not as heavy and nowhere near as expensive either. Buy what you are comfortable with, use them a lot, and enjoy you hobby/work!

Thank you for the comments. I enjoy photography now and will continue to enjoy it in the future. It is a hobby for me and not a job.

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to affording things. I personally look at Sigma before Nikon to see if there is an equivalent.
It has been my experience that many Sigma lens perform just as well as the Nikon lens at a fraction of the cost.

The only thing I have ever had a concern with is how Sigma makes such a great lens at a fraction of the Nikon equivalent? Is Sigma an inferior lens as far as build quality goes because of inferior quality parts or is Nikon just jacking up the lens price because it is a NIKON and people will pay it.

My Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM lens is much larger than the Nikon version, heavier at just over a pound and focuses faster. Now in this case the Sigma was $85 more than the Nikon but in my opinion is a much nicer and better made lens.

I realize a 24-70 Nikon Lens is the professionals choice. However, a used Nikon on eBay is $1439 and that is $1100 more then the Sigma. I know the Nikon is better but I can't afford to pay that much. Experts can explain why the Nikon is better but I am far from an expert. If I win the lottery I would likely buy the Nikon.I have only had the Sigma for a short time, time will tell if the quality and durability holds up.
