Ok, Then what am I looking at when I view a RAW file in Elements editor? Is it an embedded JPEG file or does Elements look at the RAW data and produce a viewable image?

I just tested a monochrome setting and the RAW was in color where as the JPEG is B&W. It uses the white balance "As Shot" but the rest is obviously what the senor picks up.

Thanks to all for you replies.

I am currently using Elements 11 and a Nikon D5100. I am wondering that when you work with the RAW image in Elements does this view have all the camera settings that is used in the JPEG file? I know that it uses the camera setting for white balance. Are all the other adjustments carried to the RAW image such as “Picture Control Image” (Vivid etc.) and Noise Reduction?

Thanks in advance

Don't forget to post your shots on the True Macro section of uglyhedgehog.

Will do! Should order the lens next week, if I can get permission from Mrs Moneybags.

Thanks to all for your insight. I believe I will go the 90mm.

Hoggers, I need a little advise on which lens would better suit my situation. I am considering the purchase of a macro lens for my Nikon DX camera (5100 soon to upgrade to 7100 or next generation). I have been looking at the Tamron 60mm and the Tamron 90mm. Keeping in mind I do not anticipate moving to a FX system, which of these lens would work best? Plans would be to use it for its macro capabilities primarily for outdoor shots of flowers, bugs or other interesting subjects although indoors subjects not out of the question.. At times, would also want to use the lens in a typical walk around situation. I have a 10-24 and 18-300 so I have most of the normal focal lengths covered.

Will the 90mm give a greater macro magnification than the 60mm or would the 60 give the same results? If same, I think to 60 would be a better walk around lens do to focal length not being too telephoto. Most of my everyday shots seem to be seem to be in the 35 to 100 mm range.

Thanks and thoughts please

I use this link which lets you look at the exif online or download and look at it on your computer. It's a very versatile little site.
http://regex.info/exif.cgi - and you don't have to install anything on your computer to use it.

Thanks for the link. It works great.

Went over in Nov 68 with a Kodak 110? About 2 months later a guy need some money so I bought his Minolta SRT 101 with a 50 1.4 lens and learned a lot about light. Later on went to buy more Minolta stuff which I still have. The 101’s light meter does not work anymore but I still use it once in a while just because I can. Since have moved on to Nikon.

My Minolta SRT 101 from 1968 is my favorite but with the cost of film etc. I am using my D5100 until the wife thinks I need a D7100. It might be a D7900 if I wait for her!

Mr PC
Thanks, I just tried the OK button on my D5100 and it centered the focus point too.

Just bought a Manfrotto 294 Aluminum Tripod with 804RC2 3-Way Head. It is used on a D5100 with an 18-300 and has no problem holding the weight. Very well constructed and so much better than my cheepo Dynex tripod.

Let us know when and where. Have been there in the winter but not in the spring. Hopefully we can make it.

Make sure you plan a trip up the volcano, Haleakalā. It is an incredible adventure. Sunrise or sunset is great but a trip up there during the day is still awe inspiring. You should have both a wide angle and telephoto for the best shots. Also, the coast north of Lahaina is easy to get to and takes less time than the Hanna road and is almost as scenic. .

I have a D40 with a Lexar 16gb card and it does not have any trouble reading and writing to it. I am not sure if it will use all 16gb on the card because I typically off load the card after a shooting session.

Minolta SRT 101. It taught me about light. Still would like to have a match needle on a DSLR.
