Do we look at the picture first or do we look at the technical details (No noise, no spots, dead sharp focus).
That is how most of the judging in clubs is done but, that picture will not be a good seller on the market, could be but not because of the details but of the picture content.

I think part of it results from a level of rudeness that was not previously present on the Hog. A newbie asks a basic question and gets responses like, "read your manual." My last three cameras didn't come with a physical manual. Other responses are "do a google search" or "do a search on the Hog". When I first started here (a long time ago), I asked some very basic questions which were quickly and politely answered. I notice that politeness is lacking in some members.

i admit i get a little annoyed with ppl that want to be spoon fed info such as "what's the best camera (for me)? im not rude about it, i just wish ppl would do their own homework.

while in my college classes the history of Photography was a required course. the focus was on how social change influenced Photography. i disagreed, Photography is more influenced by technology. Frank Cappa could have not made 'Moment of Death" during the Spanish Civil War without the then new 35mm camera. nor could the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal. the advent of digital has greatly influenced Photography and not always for the best.

That is a great question! One comment though on your statement below -

"I recently took a class on vacuum technology. One of the topics was leak detection using helium and the point was made that "everything leaks."

I spent 19 years working at GE Nuclear Energy in the Reactor Instrumentation Division, specifically for the NNPP (Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program) and we regularly used Helium Leak Detectors - mostly Varian brand. There is a term "hermetically sealed" that describes any type of sealing that makes a given object airtight (preventing the passage of air, oxygen, or other gases). This is critical for incore reactor instrumentation, so, despite your instructors statement - not everything leaks.

then why do u need Helium Leak Detectors? lol

Which 'best lenses' use argon? I can find no reference to anything by Canon, Nikon, Sigma and so forth using argon. There may be some specialty lenses that use it but I doubt that it is common. The lens teardowns I have seen, such as Canon's EF 100-400 L II, don't mention it.

there are also liquid filled lenses used in military satellites since the 1960's
