It was a overcast day and to cold to go out and take pictures. So I decide to do a little top top photography. The northern light coming in the window was soft and perfect for this type of work. Looking around I found some colorful items to photograph. I also took a image of a crystal bowl I picked up in Europe years ago.

I use my Nikon D90, and tried out a few different setting on manual mode. Hope you like it.

I'll be doing a little more today... :)

I've used this before and probably posted about it but since I used it I thought I'd just comment on it again.

A LOT of mention is made about modifiers, softboxes, umbrellas, all kinds of fancy stuff to light scenes...but this technique works great when you just want to get 'er done.

You can use this technique by putting two speedlights up in opposite corners of a room, shooting them into the upper corner and you will have even soft light to shoot parties, get togethers of any time where you don't want to flash people in the face or set up light stands.

If you keep the strobes on low power, and mix ambient, after a few minutes folks won't even realize that flashes are going off up in the corners of the room!

So here is the shot, and here is a shot of the set up...a YBN560 just sitting on my entertainment center. (I only used one but you can use two or more.)

My walls aren't even white...they are a puke yellow for the most part so this is a pretty forgiving technique on that count.

Also note that this helps you keep depth of field and image quality because you don't have to open up wide and use a high ISO...you are raising the light level to an acceptable level without making it look "flashy".
I've used this before and probably posted about it... (show quote)

Thank you for your suggestion. When I shoot in a small room, I prefer using the flash on the camera, and a taped piece of white paper under the flash, and bouncing the light off the ceiling. It's warm, and puts a small sparkle on the eyes, without getting red eye.

I did not read the contest rules closely enough, so this one was rightly removed from "Product Shot". Still it's worth sharing. Shot in an indoor market in Urubamba.

It's a great shot, Dave. Everything, the colors, lighting, and composition were outstanding!! Great job.

Really great shot! Can you explain your setup?

Thank you for the nice comment. It's a very simple setup. I used a 24x24 carboard box, and white poster paper.

I cut the top and the front of the box...this leave me the bax, the sides and the base of my box. There is my Mini studio. Next I cut the the with of the poster paper so it would fit the box.

I draped the long end of the paper in the box and clipped the paper to the top, rear of the box... Then I adjusted the paper and clapped corners of the paper to the front of the box.

The poster paper is now set as the back drop..... Next you set the product on the paper, and your ready to go.

I don't have studio light so, I positioned the cup towards the large window to get the soft lighting. I wasn't happy with the result, so I played around with the color balance and contrast. I also had to do a little "cleanup" of the speck of reflection that I didn't care for. I added the butterfly for color.

A little work, but it was fun to do.

I ook this picture of my wife's cute cups, and I added the butterfly in the lightroom. I have always enjoyed table top photography. Hope you like it.
