I will be in Haines during the first week of August. The motel desk clerk advised us about the Chilkoot River and the bears. I have a Tamron 150-600mm lens. What lens did you use for your photos? I so enjoyed looking at your album and hope I'm lucky enough to see a little of what you have shown! They are fantastic photos!
Do you see people out of their vehicles watching the bears?

August is the perfect time for bear viewing. I use a Nikon D800 and lean toward a 500 mm f/4, or the Nikkor 80-400. There is a road that parallels the Chilkoot River, where people can move up and down the river while the bears engage in their favorite sport of fishing. I do photography guide work in Haines, and if you are interested in pursuing some options there, I would be happy to share some emails with you.

Monitors emit light ... paper absorbs light. I always bump up my EV by a third of a stop before delivering to proDPI.com, who do great work.

Hard to beat Haines, down in Southeast Alaska, for eagles and bears, particularly in August when the pinks are running in the Chilkoot River. Scenery is splendid while you are waiting for the wildlife to appear. A sampling of what you might find is shared in my recent album on SmugMug:

Hallo Bay is a short flight from Homer into a wilderness area. They have day trips and multi day stays in camp. The main attraction there are Alaska Brown Bear.

Be advised about Hallo Bay Bear Camp before you sign up. We spent several days there last year, and this is my review: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g31009-d1159589-Reviews-Hallo_Bay_Lodge_Bear_VIewing-Homer_Alaska.html

I have had several of my photos used by the First National Bank of Alaska in their state calendar over the years. My commission on each photo was less than $1.50 (not per calendar). I was pleased to see my work on the state calendar, and continued to submit images to: 1. Act as a barometer to gauge how successful I was at selecting shots that would be accepted by the stock company; 2. Generate enough income to reach the "payout" threshold. That took a few years to accomplish. The best part is just telling my tour guests the story, and advising them to keep their day jobs. I do not bother submitting to stock companies anymore.

I quite enjoyed your suggestion of doubling up on the Detail Extractor ... I had never thought to do that and the included file turned out quite nicely from that extra layer. I am unclear as to how you stipulate the filter be used in Multiply mode? The photo is recently along the Big Sur coast on a typical mysty day.

I'm always happiest with dramatic lighting, so capturing clearing fog - especially in early morning when sun is lower - is one of my favorite winter pastimes. We get a lot of fog here in the winter; sometimes it's patchy and light, and sometimes it's heavy, dark and pervasive.

Filters mentioned below are from Nik Color Efex. I have learned, from the generous and helpful folks on UHH, how to reduce opacity, use layer masks and different blend modes, and combine effects.

First two with Canon T3i, #3 with Canon SX50. All shot in raw and edited in PSE 13. Regarding camera settings, I usually don't do much special, sometimes will use exposure compensation to lighten, especially if the sun is trying to peek through and I'm shooting towards it.

You may have Color Space set differently in the two programs. Check this article from Scott Kelby...http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1660185

Hope this helps.

This has been driving me crazy for years. Anything I export from PS looks fine on my monitor, but when I get work back from the lab, it seems the red channel has been compromised. (Better living through LR). I am hoping this wonderful insight solves that problem. Thanks for the link. (Guess I have been a closet goober all these years ... hard tellin', not knowin')

Rick has recently overcome some medical challenges and has relocated. He got behind for a while, but is ramping up for full scale service. Let's all hope that he has no more health setbacks to stymie his efforts. As a personal note, if Rick reads this, I would be interested in knowing if Rick is mentoring other technicians to achieve his high rate of successful repairs at fair prices.

Some years back Rick said he could repair an older Nikon lens for me, then kept it a long time before finally deciding he didn't want to do it after repeated inquiries as to what was happening with the repair. (There was nothing more wrong with the lens than originally described.) Charged me to send it back.

If you buy the best the first time, it only hurts once. I tried an Adorama house brand (Flashpoint) and finally bought a Gitzo. Big difference, despite Adorama's sales pitch.

Haines now has a Staples?
My family and I used to camp at Haines when we lived in Whitehorse. Lovely town in one of the most beautiful natural locations I have ever seen.

No, Haines does not have a Staples, a Costco, Home Depot, Barnes and Noble, or Bed Bath and Beyond. We are deliciously box-free still. I have the printing done when we are in California. For some reason, Staples still will not ship to Alaska, but they ship for free everywhere else. Not unusual, and also not quite so convenient. Their online order department is VERY good, so when I head south things are pretty well set to go.

Staples up here doe's calendars. Various sizes, shapes and prices.

I use Staples for my calendars, because I can design them in In Design, and export them as a PDF, which Staples will use in the printing. Allows me total control and flexibility with respect to format, which many other calendar companies will not do.

This is condensation. as the air leave the prop tips, it expands rapidly and as as we know, when it expands, it cools. If the temp/dew point spread is relatively close, that expansion causes the effect you see, it can be off the tips of props or wingtips. Very common is maritime environments, but can happen anywhere if conditions are right.

Many thanks for the definitive explanation! I have seen that off wing tips, so considered that might be the case in this case. Dew Point in Kodiak Alaska is definitely up there! Mystery solved.

Here is another odd propeller shot: the spiral that goes back over the fuselage. Given the light tips of the prop, thought it might be the tips, but that motion is not reflected in the fuselage at all. Condensation? An interesting aspect of the photo that I have not been entirely sure about, but would appreciate any thoughts.

Find a youngster to teach the art of photography, and have him carry the equipment! If he is good at it, you can just pass it along as he earns it.
