You are absolutely right and I respect your point of view. I apologize for being a bit testy.

Not a problem at all.

It amazes me how some people can attempt to expound on what science says or doesn't say, knows or doesn't know, without having a clue beyond watching some mindless pap on television.

Not only is their ignorance on the subjects both abyssal and abysmal, they seem a bit proud about it. How anyone in the 21st century, 150 years since the publication of Darwin's "Origin" still consider "Well... if we evolved from monkeys, WHY are there still monkeys? Huh?" a significant question and one that is supposed to shake evolutionary science to its core.

What's even more amazing is that during that 150 year span, not one evolutionary biologist has ever made the claim we evolved from monkeys. Darwin himself never made the claim, but if I had a dime for every time some Young Earther made it... my retirement would be secure.

It is a wonder.

If you, even with all your obvious advanced education and intellect, think you know enough about cosmology, for example, to say definitively that you have it all "figured out", then you are merely one in a long line of others who have been and will always be proven wrong eventually.

Still flogging that poor straw man, I see. Not once have I claimed to have it "all figured out." No one on here, other than some of the religionists, have it all figured out. I don't know of any scientist who claims it is all figured out.

Please, give that poor straw man a break!

here are experts in every field but no one is expert in every field, and even those do not know everything about their chosen fields of study. Suppose I were to ask the forum what is the last book you've read about Lenca culture, or Garifuna music? I would probably get no responses, either.

But we are not talking about those subjects. It was SteveR who brought up cosmology and stating someone (as yet unidentified) on a television show(as yet unidentified) claimed we had no knowledge about how superclusters of galaxies form. Cosmology, evolution and other scientific topics ARE talked about on this forum and, apparently, those writing about the subjects know as much as I do about your Lenca culture or Garifuna music.

I know bupkes about either of them.

But then, I wouldn't be attempting to discuss those subjects; many do exactly that here without knowing the first thing about astronomy, physics or biology.

absoluty.without electricity.

Most of us would be dead. Life expectancy in 1870 for males was 44.1 years, females fared a bit better at 46.4 years.

Not sure about you, but there is not a time in the past I'd wish to live. Our lives are better today than they have ever been. Even the poorest of us command more power with the flick of a switch than the Pharaohs of Egypt or the Roman emperors.

As Harvey mentioned, generators are cheap. I have a pair of Honda EU2000i units that will power the furnace, the fridge, electric coffee maker and a few lights for a couple gallons of gas a day.

I read "Who Made God - Searching for a Theory of Everything" by Edgar Andrews. I actually can read though I prefer picture books. :)

Did you find the book compelling? What struck you as the most interesting things in it?

Just curious since I haven't read it, but added it to my ever-lengthening reading list.

I was referring to statements of how the universe was formed, galaxies, clusters, etc. Anyone who thinks he has most anything "figured out" is a fool.

Don't understand much about what a scientific theory is, then.

If you don't think these things can be figured out... what are the astronomers observing when they watch the evolution of galaxies or star formation? The constancy of the speed of light acts as a time machine. We can see what was going on on the sun 8 minutes ago, what was happening to Sirius 8 years ago and what the universe looked like 8 billion years ago.

But let me ask you the same question I've asked others on here (and must report that not one has answered): What was the last book on cosmology or astronomy you've read?

Wow! You certainly flogged that straw man! Where in the discussion did anyone claim "we have it all figured out"?

Now, there are some religionists on the forum who do seem to have god's plans all figured out. Are they fools as well?

If your right, when I die I'll just turn into dust after having lived a life loving Something you don't believe in.

But, on the other hand, If I'm right and God is there, I will live eternity on a new earth free of pain, suffering, hurt, sickness, etc. And when you die you will find out the truth there is a God, and as the scriptures tell us, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord. But your eternal destination will be a far different place than where I will reside.

A false dichotomy. You make it sound as if there were only two postmortem options: stone dead and your god. There are many other options possible which will place you into the same quandry as the unbeliever.

Suppose, Allah is god. How's that gonna work for you?

That's just it....it's obvious from the nature of the universe that God did it. What we can learn from the universe is his power and intellect. It's obvious that the universe was not put together by some "monkey." Last night I saw a program about a project that is mapping the universe. It is finding that galaxies are grouped in clusters and they have no explanation for this. The longest cluster of galaxies that they have found is 1.4 billion light years long.

Since you just saw the show last night... what show was it?

And who was the moron who said astrophysics has no explanation for galaxy clusters? What forms galaxy clusters is the same thing holding you in your chair - gravity. The problem wasn't galaxy clusters forming in the early universe, but the formation of the galaxies themselves. That problem was solved with the results of the COBE and WMAP satellites that measured tiny temperature variations in the CMBR.

You will not learn science watching television. Pick up a good book on a selected topic and start reading and understanding what it is you read.

In Philadelphia Comcast brokered a deal that exempted them from all City taxes for something like fifteen years. They pay nothing to the City of Phila in exchange for bringing in 1,900 jobs. When the deal was made in 2005 the prediction was that the number of jobs would expand to 3,000. As far as I know it hasn't happened and the majority of the people that do work there do not live in the City.

Comcast holds the Consumerist 2010 Worst Company In America award.

Is Comcast a church? It appears to be a religion to some people who can't live without their cable fix everyday.

The tax exemptions for religious institutions should have been eliminated years ago. If they run a charity, like a soup kitchen then that should be exempt. But all their real estate, all there holdings? That's just silly.
In New York City the Catholic Church is one of the largest real estate holders in the City. They own office buildings, apartments and commercial properties, yet they pay no taxes on any of them.
Other churches aren't any better and this is another part of the tax codes that needs to be changed.

I don't think that's true any longer. I recall a change in law back in the 60s that income producing property like commercial buildings are taxed as they would be if owned by secularists. Buildings used exclusively for religious purposes are exempt.

Lots of people die for lots of good reasons, its not unusual, sometimes special, never a god maker. If 'jesus' thought he was to die for others sins , (not required) but well nice gesture, much worse things have happened to mere mortals without the grandstanding and will continue to happen, jesus is, given what we have seen in recent decades spectacularly unimpressive. And lets face it, the confusion about which god is the real god (if any) indicates very poor planning and really pathetic communication, just think what he could have achieved with face book? and surely he knew what was coming and could have waited? but apparently not. God is the warm fuzzy delusion embraced by the deluded that would rather believe in anything rather than accept nothing, such is the greed of humans and the inability to accept that what we have is indeed limited.

As George Carlin explained it, god is like an office temp with a bad attitude.

Quote:
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would've been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say "this guy", because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.

When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Gandhi replied, "I think it would be a very good idea."

You should at least check crap like this out on Snopes before posting it. Doing so might enhance your credibility.

You must be one of the BLIND FOLLOWERS of SNOPES which is one of the MOST improper and misleading sites around!! It has been known amongst FACT checkers that the couple that runs this site ARE JUST PROMOTING THEIR AGENDA, they do NOT care about the TRUTH!!!

I don't believe ANYTHING that SNOPES says unless I can verify the results in AT LEAST 2 or 3 OTHER places!!! SO MUCH of their stuff is WRONG and VERY slanted!!

Did you believe what Robert posted in the opening post? I didn't see any links to sites that might be hosting the video.

Strange, that.
