Does it really matter what someone else thinks about your camera gear? As long as you are happy with it that's all that matters, correct?

Absolutely right. Thank you.

I think the composition and shots are excellent. However, they don't appear to be especially sharp in my view. I would consider them somewhat soft.

What's the matter? Figuring out a DSLR the high point of your life and then I come along and say it's no big deal?

Nope. I just don't appreciate posters who mislead and misrepresent. After all, some poor unsuspecting souls frequently rely on the advice given in forums like this. In my view, that creates an obligation on the purveyors of information to be as accurate and honest as possible. Obviously, you do not share this view. To each his/her own.

"There is no such thing as too big a learning curve with a camera like the 70D, or most any other DSLR."

Your words. Obviously you now wish to qualify them with phrases like "common sense" and "average" intelligence. Yep, you most definitely know what you're talking about. Thanks a lot for your guidance. I'm sure Forrest Gump would be pleased.

Well, you can assume whatever you wish about the capabilities of people you have never met. Personally, I figure that anyone who has the common sense and interest necessary to join a photograpy forum and ask questions has the ability to figure out a DSLR. Even a 1Dx. An afternoon spent reading the manual and understanding a few basic concepts is all it takes to get started. How good they become at using it is a matter of how much they want to practice and educate themselves. And no, it's not rocket science. It's only a damn camera and any information needed on how to operate it is readily available. Operating a camera, any camera, is the easy part. Being a good photographer is what's hard, no matter what the camera is.

It's not a matter of assumption. Egalitarianism is not the essence of Mother Nature. If you believe otherwise, you have my deepest sympathy.

There is no such thing as too big a learning curve with a camera like the 70D, or most any other DSLR. You can shoot on full automatic, like any point-and-shoot, or on full manual, like the most advanced professional cameras. Or anyplace in between. How deep you dive in and how quickly is totally up to you. Don't be intimidated. It's just a camera. It will do whatever you tell it to. You just have to learn what to tell it. That comes from practice, educating yourself, and more practice. Have fun! You have an excellent camera.

That would very much depend on the individual's level of intelligence and ability to learn new things. Not everyone is capable of learning rocket science or the use of a sophisticated camera.

I am upgrading to a DSLR from other camera types. The T3i seems to be a useful starting point in terms of function vs cost....for mainly outdoor/landscape photography...not for sporting events etc.

Advice/comments please?

T2i is less expensive and generally rated higher for still photography. If you prefer an articulated screen and enhanced video capability, the T3i would be an excellent choice.

I'm thinking a Nikon, but want one better than my Canon
SX160 is with 16x zoom. I'd prefer one with full frame whatever it's called. I know I can't afford a slr, but interchangeable lenses is a must. Thanks a lot.

Don't mean to be crude, but with those limitations, you're SOL.

Does anyone own the Nikon D7100? My manual tells what SD cards are compatible, just wondering if anyone has a preference on the size and speed of the card that they use. getting ready to purchase one.

Yes, I own the camera. Recommend San Disk, minimum 16gb, class 10 if you intend to video.

Jim Bob, you need to get a grip on things - this is what we DO here. And many professional photographers ARE capable of giving useful information without "having a law" degree - if you are a "professional" ANYTHING, you get a bit familiar with how things work over fifty or sixty YEARS. Thanks, BTW, for comparing us with "bums" - there are some great people, just "down on their luck" that are"bums."

There are also people on UHH that are members of the US Military, disabled veterans, college professors, lawyers, MD's, professional photographers and very talented, award-winning, amateur photographers and a lot of variously employed people from around the world. We REALLY appreciate your kind words and GREAT WISDOM.

Now, why don't you crawl back under your rock and let us "do our thing" in total ignorance of whatever the hell you think you know.

Here's a quote for you, "If you can't talk about the weather, sex, politics, religion and the law, what's left?" That was from an address that I gave to students at Oxford University some years ago - and it's been quoted on TV (by Jay Leno) and in books and magazines ever since.

Thanks again for your input.

When I need the advice of a photographer, perhaps your name might merit consideration. When I need the advice of a lawyer, you name would never occur to me, nor should it to any reasonable person seeking a legal opinion. In most states, providing legal advice without a license to practice law is a crime. So the rock you assign to me would be better rolled over on you.

If a photographer takes a picture of someones private property "old homesite"and then sells it.....is this ok or can the photographer be stopped?

No one on this site should even attempt to answer this question unless (s)he has a law degree and is conversant in the law of the state in which you wish to photograph. Never take the word of bums when you need to know how to dress.

Hello, my daughter is a freshman in HS and she is going to a HS that specializes in what they want to be when they grow up. She wants to be the next Dr. Dre but with pics and video. She is a freshman and taking a class where she is excelling amazingly to be asked to do what the Seniors are doing. With this being said, she is needing her own camera that does video. Can any of you tell me what is a good camera with video to get for her? I have a budget of $1,000.00. If it is a Cannon that would be great because i have all the lenses and would only need to buy the body and can save some money.
Thanks,
Steph aka Maddie's Mom!

Can someone please advise me on a good photo editing software. I was wondering what most photographers use.

Corel Paintshop Pro 6 is affordable, fairly easy to learn and is exceptionally versatile. Photoshop is grossly overpriced and contains many features only certain professionals utilize.

Ken Rockwells views are not unbiased and are not trustworthy.
Some of the testing he does is just bullshitting. He hasn't even had the item in his hands.

Biased yes. But he generally admits it, unlike some who choose to impart words of wisdom on this site. Not sure how you would be in a position to confirm your last statement. Please enlighten us. Rockwell's reviews are worthy of consideration along with others. As an example, in reviewing the highly rated Sigma 35mm f1.4, he states he would purchase the comparable 35mm Nikon or Canon used before he would allow Sigma to "soil" his camera bag. He goes on to mention that the branded lenses cost significantly more than the Sigma which generally outperforms them both in his own tests. One would be hard put to argue that his bias stood in the way of an objective evaluation of the lens. A wise purchaser would be advised to consult several resources before laying down hard cash.
