I would recommend a haze filter for mountain pictures.
That is a great trip. You will love the train ride. Keep your eyes peeled for interesting shots out the windows. Butchart Gardens in Victoria is a must if you love flowers. You an spend all day there, but have extra batteries and plenty of memory cards. You can fill up an SD card in the rose garden alone.
I was using my Canon EOS 5DSR, when a teenager approached and commented on my nice camera. "I'll bet that cost 200 or 300 dollars." I gently told him the lens cost 3 times that amount. I was in the Smoky Mountains, lying on the ground to get a shot of a rippling stream when a lady approached and asked if I was ok. As Art Linkletter said, "People are Funny."
You might try something like Canon's ZoomBrowser EX. It does basic editing and is fairly straightforward.
Not if I get to them with the wasp spray.
I ended up putting aluminum foil over my lens, cutting a hole in it the shape of one of the lenses of my eclipse glasses, then taping the glasses lens over the hole. Got a few decent shots, but with some distortion. I don't think the glasses lens was down smooth on my camera lens.
I had a similar situation with Canon repair. I sent them a functioning EOS 1Dx for cleaning & routine maintenance. They first quoted about $300, then a day later it was $600, then a couple of days later they said there was water damage and it would be over $1200. I refused & they sent back a non-functioning camera. I spent several days talking to Canon folks, up to a VP. I was finally offered anything they sold for 1/2 price, but they still maintained no responsibility for my camera. I had no real choice, so opted for a 5DSR at 1/2 price. I THINK what happened was someone in repair damaged the sensor but wouldn't own up to it and blamed it on water damage. Like you, I have too much invested in Canon equipment to change.
I have used ATS Rentals several times. Good prices & great service.
I use a Vello. I have both a wired and a remote. Both work extremely well. Battery life on the remote is great.
Wired is $7.95 and remote is $37.50 at B&H.
Canon 5DSR, Tamron 150-600mm lens. Manual exposure: 600mm, f6.3, auto ISO gave me 3200, shutter @ 1/400
Here's my best effort. Only had a monopod with me, so it isn't quite as sharp.
I've used ATS Rentals several times with excellent service and the prices are significantly lower.
