I love my Nikon D850 but I've learned a lot since receiving this fantastic camera: a) you have to bring your A game to the table b) you need great lenses. The individual that said Tony Northrup said to use the 1 x 4 rule with the D850 is correct; good rule to remember. Also, even though the 28-300mm is a great lens for my old camera (D750 which I sold when I received my D850), most of the pros will tell you it is perhaps too soft for the 46mp D850. I sold my 28-300 and was sad to see it go. After a lot of research, I purchased a few lenses with the D850 in mind: 1) Yes, the unbelievable, fantastic Nikon 70-200eFL 2.8. It's expensive but my oh my, it is RAZOR sharp. But, when using this lens, you must bring your A game to the table and use the 1x4 focal rule, ie.if shooting at 200mm, use 1/800 shutter speed or greateer even if VR is on 2) I wanted something on the short end and DxO Mark gave "better" sharpness grades to the Nikon 18-35mm than its more expensive and more popular 16-35mm. So, I purchased the 18-35mm and it too is razor sharp. This lens, however, has no VR but it is not needed with this lens. 3) I just simply did not like some of the negative comments on the 24-70e Nikon lens so instead, I purchased the Sigma 50mm Art. Yikes, it too is razor sharp and has no VR but again, not needed with a 50mm. I do follow the 1x4 rule with this lens too, i.e. shoot at 1/200 shutter speed or more for the most "keepers". If using flash, for example, and I shoot at less than 1/200, I'll get less keepers. So, no hard and fast rules here except: a) bring your A game b) best lenses which, unfortunately, are on the expensive side. Good luck with your wonderful camera and don't forget to get Steve Perry's e-books, one of which is on focusing which includes the D850. BTW, the pictures I'm getting from my D850 are, for the most part, unbelievably RAZOR sharp. I'm having a blast with this camera.

I used the 28-300 on a D500 extensively last summer and like the results so I gave it a thorough try out on my D850 and to my surprise, it did VERY well at all f stops other than f/20 and f/22 where it was nearly worthless. I needed an image for a background in a collage I'm making for a local coffee shop and I made that image with the 28-300 on a D850, hand held, at 1/100 of a second, f/6.3, ISO 250, 135mm. This isn't a lens test but it does give an idea of what the lens is capable of.
There is some softening in the corners, but the sharpness is more than acceptable for many uses. I also use the 10-24 f/2.8, 17-35 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 200-500 f/5.6, 200-400 f4.0, Micro Nikor, & 50 f/1.4 so I do have an idea about what some other Nikon Professional lenses are capable of.
