It's just so damned difficult to keep track of all the people I'm supposed to hate and all the reasons I'm supposed to hate them for. No wonder so many of us want to go back to the "good old days," polio and all.

Writing as a volcanologist, I can tell you that volcanoes are mantle phenomena, heat comes from under the crust which is 50 km (30 mi) thick at Yellowstone. Volcanoes are not sensitive to surface forces, such as the explosions of a bombs, no matter how powerful they might be.

Vesuvius erupted in early 1944, ostensibly providing a beacon for the Germans to find Naples. I dimly remember stories from my youth that; a) the Germans wanted to bomb the crater hoping to set it off, or b) the Americans actually did bomb the crater hoping to stop the eruption. The 304th Bomb Group waited too long to fly their airplanes out of a field near Pompeii and lost most of them to damage from falling hot rocks. Some of this can be quickly checked in Wikipedia.

When I was flying P-3s, we would routinely shut one (of four) down while on station to save fuel which would slow the airplane and extend time on station. That mostly involved flying big circles listening to sonobuoys hoping to hear submarine sounds in the sea. If the engine failed to re-start, flying home took longer.
