I'm asking because it might be handy to use my Leica variable viewfinder on top the D700 as a framing aid when there is a IR filter on the lens. You can't really see through that filter, taking the filter off and on to frame the photo is very unhandy, and the amount of parallax error would be acceptable (not much different from using it on a rangefinder camera). The viewfinder goes from 35 mm to 135 mm, if I remember right, and it also corrects for distance.

The worry is whether the metal foot might contact anything other than the outer part of the hot shoe and screw up a circuit. That foot is fairly tight and I don't know about putting a thin layer of something on it that might wear off anyway or leave a sticky mess on things.

The Leica viewfinder shoe is metal and is flat on the bottom.

I would be wary of putting a solid metal mount on the camera's contacts. What you could try is cutting a square the same size as the Leica viewfinder mount out of a plastic milk carton and sliding that between the mount and the hot shoe. No sticky tape, and ypu would be electrically isolated.

You can also make a 2nd copy of the original image CTL-J Then convert the new layer to a smart object Ass you add a filter it will be added to the smart object plus allowing you to edit the filter

That's the correct answer. That way you can re-open the NIK filter and make adjustments to each filter as needed.

Nothing appears on the desktop screer. But the disk's power light is on and the sisk is spinning.

Here's something that you can try, it's a longshot, but it's worked for me.
Get a copy of Minitools Partition Wizard, it's free. Plug in the drive and start the program. It may see the drive, if it does, you can copy the partition that has your data to unallocated space on a new drive. I just rescued all of my daughter-in-law's data using this tool. PM me if you need more instructions.

What happens when you plug it in? Do you get an error that says it won't mount, or does it just not show up in Finder?

When you are totally alone with your thoughts, I would suggest an Argus C-3, aka "The Brick." It's the ultimate anti-impressive choice. There is a risk, however, that other photogs and civilians might think you are the coolest guy around, because you make images with a 100% manual, no electronics involved, analog device. It could work either way or both! >Alan

I have one of those, Inherited it form my father. I need to run a roll of film through it and see if it still works.

In my experience, when people see a big camera/lens they automatically assume that you're a professional. If I'm carrying my Df with a 50mm, I rarely get noticed, but If I have the D7000 and 70-200, invariably, somebody will ask if I'm a "photographer". I get a kick out of that one. I usually look at the camera and say "Nope, I just like carrying big cameras around, here's your sign"

And the black tape will flag it as a valuable item.

Exactly.
My Df looks like an old 35mm, so people either don't notice it or ask what film I'm shooting.

Any would-be camera thief worth their salt should know what camera you have by the shape of the prism housing. If they can't do that, they have no business stealing my camera.

Ccleaner has a pretty good duplicate file finder, shows the file name, date, size, and location of all dupes. Makes it easy to pick the ones to delete.

It's for a Nikon D7000.

I have a D7000 and the Tolina 100mm and they are a great pair, the lens is built like a tank and quite sharp. I say grab one, I doubt you'll regret it.

Epson printer question

I am considering the purchase of an Epson Artisan 1430 wide format photo printer, if you have one, are you happy with it, is it still printing good after a year and would you buy another one ?
And I do appreciate your responses.
Frank

I have a 1430 and have been more than happy with it. it makes beautiful prints and it's pretty tough. My house flooded last August and right before we evacuated, I put it in the attic hoping that the water wouldn't reach it. We only got 3 feet in the house and it sat in the attic for over five months while I rebuilt the house. South Louisiana heat and humidity, not to mention construction dust in the air. I took it down about a week ago, cleaned it up, and ran a print head cleaning cycle and guess what, it works like a brand new one still!
Epson also has some of the best customer service I've ever dealt with.

I have heard of people having good luck and people having bad luck with aftermarket grips, probably more negative than positive reviews. I haven't seen any negative experiences with camera maker brands. I got the Nikon grip for my D7000 and have been very satisfied with it.

Erik, if one uses mirror lockup and removes the lens, one can see the shutter. This does not indicate there is anything wrong.

You're absolutely right of course. What I meant was under normal conditions, you won't see the shutter. Sure, you can make it happen, but why would you?
