Yep! The new one ...... now THAT's what I'm talking about! It just bothers me that a single lens would cost more than a new 7D MK II body by about $500.00

All of my lenses cost more than the body I shoot with.
My last upgrade will be to a 5D mk iii when I find one that I can afford.

Don't you WISH Bigbear? No, the 5D MK III stays right where it is. And the lens I'm looking at is the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM model, not the current one.

I figured no deal …..
I have the first model EF 100-400 L IS. It's my wife's primary lens. The new model has internal rotating zoom as opposed to the slide zoom that I have.

But my point is that the word "slave" is used in both contexts...both "optical slave" (which the 430EXII cannot do) and wireless slave (which it CAN do but some of my others cannot) It's not enough to just use the word "slave"

The 430exII works with wireless optical(IR).
Ot does not work with wireless RF.

Auto what?

Sometimes I forget they have an auto mode.
Some people never leave it.

Background: I currently own a Canon 7D and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens (and just incidentally, a Canon SX60 HS thrown into the mix as well as a Canon 5D MK III).

I can justify upgrading one or the other, but not both. The upgrade will probably happen in mid-2015.

So...... should I get the Canon 7D MK II or the new Canon 100-400mm L series lens?

Are you wanting to trade your 5D mk III for an EF 100-400 IS L lense??

Lets make a deal !!

Butt shots?! :)

At least they are cute ones. hehehe

I've been using BBF for years.
Just be aware that when you switch to auto, BBF does not work on the EOS bodies.

But why won't it work? When this flash flashes, won't the slave sendor see that flash and trip the slave? Or do I not understand these 'new-fangled' master/slave flash combinations?

They work on IR (infrared) which requires the slaves to be in sight of the master to sense the IR being sent.

The 600ex-rt works with RF (radio frequency) that can be used as a master or slave.
The new EOS bodies have the IR and RF built in to act as a master.

Wireless slave only not optical, it does not have an optical slave sensor

Only works with IR. So it has to be in line of site with the master that is programmed with the same frequency.

I also work on a 27" iMac. The idea of giving it up for any reason would be unacceptable to me.

Although Apeture will go unsupported down the road, your current version, nor the next release aren't going to become totally obsolete and quit working anytime soon. When Apeture eventually get to the point that it begins to be a problem, you can switch over to an Apple version of Lightroom for much less than what it will take to change hardware.

Will the laptop be your primary editing station? Are you comfortable switching everything over to a new operating system? Will not having that great 27 inch screen available for editing be just a trivial concern?

If it were me, I'd stick with a MacBook, continue to use Apeture until doing so becomes an annoyance, and then make a software change. Of course my iMac and I have a deep, longtime relationship, so I may be biased!

I'm curious

Why won't these flashes work as a 'master?' Won't ANY flash trigger a slaved flash, or a flash in slave mode?

Thanks

The 580ex will work as a master or slave.
The 430ex will only work on hot shoe or as a slave. It will not work as a master.

Not a problem, that's why we have discussions.
The 7D was the first to have that ability.

Will this hurt the democratic party for years to come as the American people view them as the party of big government?

The liberals destroy everything they come in contact with including their own cool-ade party.

There is one other use for the pop-up flash. It can be used to trigger an off-camera Speedlite, when that Speedlite acts as a slave. There is a setting on the camera that will handle this. When in this mode, the pop-up will not produce enough light to affect the shot, but it will trigger the slave. The one drawback to this approach is that, even though the slave may have HSS capability, the pop-up doesn't, so you won't be able to use a shutter speed faster than the shutter sync speed of your camera. If you aren't shooting faster than 1/200 or 1/250, this approach works fine.

The 50D is not capable of using the popup as a master.
The 430exii also can not be used as a master.
The 580exII can be either a master or a slave.
I have an ST-E2 to control both of my speedlites as needed.

I carry 2 50D's.
When shooting people I have a 24-105 f/4 IS with a 580ex speedlite on one and a 70-200 2.8 IS on the other.
When shooting wildlife I have a 70-200 2.8 IS on one and a 300 2.8 IS on the other.
