The first time I tried photographing snowflakes I used black velvet to catch the snow and that worked ok but I wasn't getting the result I was looking for. The next time I caught the snow on the black velvet and when I found a flake that looked promising I used a very small brush and transferred it to a glass microscope slide which I set on top of a 150 ml beaker which sat on top of a blue background. To get some light from the side I used a car trouble light. My shots are handheld and with the shallow DOF not all edges are sharp but using this technique gave me results closer to what I was after.
