Capturing snowflakes without an elaborate setup is challenging but fun.

Did you take the snowflake to a "safe place" before you took its picture?

Perhaps taken on glass?

Captured snowflakes then transferred to glass microscope slide. A great winter project.

Thank you. If we get more snow with "good" flakes I'll try it again.

Thanks "Curve In." When you post images I always admire your work. As I viewed your snowflake post I thought to myself - it looks to me like a black wool mitten capture. That was a nice capture.

Thank you! I used a 10" x 10" block of foam that has a black felt-like backing. It gave me a greater area to "hunt" for a good flake.

The first time I tried photographing snowflakes I used black velvet to catch the snow and that worked ok but I wasn't getting the result I was looking for. The next time I caught the snow on the black velvet and when I found a flake that looked promising I used a very small brush and transferred it to a glass microscope slide which I set on top of a 150 ml beaker which sat on top of a blue background. To get some light from the side I used a car trouble light. My shots are handheld and with the shallow DOF not all edges are sharp but using this technique gave me results closer to what I was after. Appreciate you sharing your information.
