I want to add a battery grip to my d7100. I don't want OEM as this is not my main camera. For third party grip what would you recommend. I need this as i will be using a long lens on this and with big hands allows me to hold the camera more comfortably Thanks in advance!

I too have large hands. I have the nikon grip on my d7100 but a vivitar grip on my d5200. The Nikon grip just feels better, all controls are right there and it comes with the AA battery tray and Nikon quality

I was listening to a Jarod Polin (Fro Knows Phots) podcast in which he recommended the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 as a fast, sharper alternative to the Nikon 18-55mm variable aperture kit lens.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this lens?

Why would you compare it to a kit lens. I think a Nikon 17-55 2.8 would make more sense

I shoot the D800, and the D7000 as a backup. The 810 is NOT a sports camera it's focus is slower than the D7000, and the files are twice the size so it is slower on bursting. If burst is your only reason to upgrade don't waste your money. Instead learn how to anticipate the action and stop bursting so much. Faster card, and pre-focusing then setting to manual focus will all speed up your shooting. But the D800 will slow you down!
As I said before, I was shooting around vendors and an extremely large headed man seated in front of me. Had to act fast

Try a Sandisk 95mb card.

Do you REALLY want to spend several thousand dollars to get 2 more shots-per-second?

Don't want to drop cash, just read here that 810 buffers faster. Will make 95mb card my primary in my D7100. Thanks

They allowed you to take your gear in the show??
I took my smaller backpack with one body and a 70-300, a 70-200 and a 17-55. They had me open it up at the entrance and they inspected it. I suspect if it won't fit under the seats they would probably not allowed it .

Buffering - do you shoot raw or JPG? What SD card do you use?

I find that shooting raw I get a fairly fast burst with a Samsung Pro 32 GB card on my D7100 - fast enough over many other class 10 cards.
(I shoot 14 bit raw)

Lots of discussion on here regarding different cards and speeds.

Good info here that can speed up your burst rates after the buffer fills....

I shoot JPG and use a Scandisk extreme pro 32 gb

Well I went to Monster Jam , Phoenix and took some photos. The lighting was sufficient for my 70-300 Nikon lens. I sat in general seating not in a special photographers area, thusly , I had to shoot around vendors and a guy in front of me with a head the size of Jupiter. My question is the buffering, my D7100 couldn't keep up with the action, is the 810 a better camera for action or is it me. what do you think of the pictures I did get, just three of em, many more

I had the same result by adjusting the ISO. The brightness of the moon flooded the rest of the photo. I'm no pro but try 1/15 or 1/12 speed (on a tripod) and try. This is what I got

Well I went to monster jam here in phoenix and was surprised with the available light. I sat in row 26 and used the 70-200 and the 70-300 both auto ISO. did not have any special photographer seats just in the crowd so I was dodging vendors and other people.

Thanks all. Close means they usually have a safety zone where all the field level seats are and they barricade that area off. I think I'll be okay with dust and dirt and I'm guessing fifty feet where the trucks will be at the closest

I am taking my grandson to the Phoenix Monster Jam @ Chase field. We are in section 131, row 26, fairly close to field. Is any UHH'er familiar with the lighting and distance. I have a D7100 and a 70-300 and a 70-200 f2.8 and a Tamron 150-600 but I don't think a tripod would be feasible. Thanks

The "extra battery" is the one in the grip and or the one in the camera itself. Sorry for confusion. If you don't charge the one in the camera, basically you have same single battery with a nice grip. Happy holidays

The reason I have one on my d7100 is the obvious extra battery but also the Nikon grip is made of the same material as the frame so there won't be a stud failure as with third party grips
