Photomatix Pro
Hi Joe
First of all, I would like to give you props for a well composed image.
You stated that this is your 2nd attempt at HDR. If you plan to do more HDR, I would highly recommend that you acquire Photomatix Pro for your PP toolbox. It is hands down the best program presently offered for HDR work.
HDR can be way over the top if not used sensibly, but used as it was intended to capture light and shadow as the eye sees it, and to enhance colors correctly, results can be very rewarding.
I took the liberty to run your image through Photomax Pro to give you and idea of the colors and shadow details that are hidden in you image.
Again, I really like the mood and drama you captured
Keep Shooting

Your second images are better
Took the liberty to crop and sharpen the three second images to give you an example of suggestions...
Florals usually present best when shot and/or cropped as tight as possible without sacrificing the composition and intent of the subject.
Try to keep the background as neutral as possible so the interest is focused on the key subject.
Do you use a tripod? The advantage of the tripod gives you the ability to study your shot for focus, angle adjustment, exposure bracket/adjustment...

Suggestion next time you shoot Iris...
Shoot from a lower angle & closer position to capture more elegance of the petals and beard of the Iris... try to avoid a downward angle if possible... and watch your focus.
Attached is an example of suggestion

Hi Jessica...
Please show some of your "camera" images
I would go with the Nikon D7100.
One of over 100 Iris images to be presented in a dual media show this summer.

First... Very good image!
I view this forum to enjoy what other perceive through their lens.
This is a "show & tell" forum where I believe many are looking for advice and encouragement to pursue better image making.
Verbal suggestions are the norm, but to have the ability to "visually show" your verb thoughts is priceless.
That said, here are my verbal visual suggestions...
Couple possibilities on editing... Keep shooting!

The Epson V500 PHOTO is about the best film/slide scanner available, especially for the money. $150.00 US
I agree 100%. For the money it is good piece of equipment...
Easy to use and the results are good.
I also use it to scan other subjects... see attached image
Scaned with V500
Believe it is a Hybrid Tea Rose-"Snow Fire"
Snow Fire, Hybrid Tea Rose
Good subject matter for HDR... (I like HDR for its ability to add color and effect if the image allows for it).
Took the liberty to crop your image to a square format which I use a lot...square can give you more options, depending on the subject... keep shooting and practice the HDR
