I called Canon today. Always great support

They sent me a link that allowed me to upload the three images I've included here and the tech on the phone said, he'd never seen the white flash of light but felt like it was probably a reflection.

Canon has three levels of maintenance. You have a minor, standard, and major at $139, $349 and $539. There's no guarantee until they actually open up the camera but he felt that a Shutter replacement would be in the standard repair category.

I asked about having the autofocus system for the 5D Mark 4 installed while they're working the camera buuut.... that's not going to happen.....

Thanks for everyones input!

I own the Canon 6D I keep up with an accurate Click Count by maintaining a continuous Folder Numbering System. Even though I reformat my cards, I create new folders to stay in sequence. Under this system, I know I have over 162,000 clicks on my camera.

So, I am not totally surprised that I am having a shutter issue, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before??

When shooting extreme HIGH ISO and natural light, I get the light band in the middle of the image.

When shooting low ISO and with strobes, I do not get the band. I suspect the band of light is there, but it may be so minute, it can't be detected.

The dark band always shows up, but again, without any consistency.

Ideas, speculation or 1st hand knowledge would be appreciated. If you have first hand knowledge, how is this issue described when calling into Canon and what cost may I be facing?

Thanks!

I have a used 7D that had less than 19K on it, but had a bad shutter. Everything was darker than it should've been at 1/3200, and completely black at 1/4000 and 1/8000. Canon said the shutter was shorted, and replaced it. The cost was around $250, but since it was within the first 30 days of purchase, the store had to eat it.

That doesn't even look like a shutter issue, though, at least not one that I'm familiar with. I would think a shutter would produce a straight line, not one that's shaped like a triangle. Not sure what to make of it. Hopefully, someone else has seen this before.

This thought arose after reading a post on a user checking the LCD screen in bright light. Someone mentioned Chimping and I am just curious how many of you Chimp or not Chimp. Is there some sort of unwritten stigma attached to chimping that would flag you as a deplorable and not worthy of being recognized as a serious photographer or is it a useless endeavor that is just a waste of time ? Personally I like to Chimp and look at my capture; I make adjustments and move on. I fully understand the concept of " Getting it right the first time " and fully endorse that as it makes you a better photographer. Just curious as to WHY or WHY NOT you personally choose either approach. Maybe we can get a few humorous pages out of this.... Bob

If the technology exists, why not use it? I chimp to make sure I got the exposure right. I didn't have that option in the film days. I had to wait a day two hoping I got it right. If people don't want to chimp, I'd ask them why they don't manually focus with an autofocus lens? Ahhh, yes, because autofocus makes it easier to make sure it's focused. Same goes for exposure and overall composition using the screen.

All shot 0n Canon 77D camera in RAW & Converted to JPEG. The Pentax camera & lens are in excellent condition & looks to be rarely used. The lens has no haze, fungus or yellowing & very little dust.
Most of you see what I see on the photos; very little difference between the two lenses. My Canon lens does have AF which is a great advantage for my 82 year old eyes. (How the hell they got so old in so short a time is a mystery to me) Think I may put the Pentax camera & lens up for sale later after I play with them a bit.

On the first set, I'd say your old eyes did a better job of focusing that the autofocus did.

What do YOU think is the very best photograph, you've taken, so far - in 2019? … You know - the one you are so very delighted with - you are considering blowing it up to plaster a wall with it … any takers??

I've got several, but this was probably the hardest shot to get. 'Twas a feather floating from a single spider web thread in a light breeze. It took a lot of shots with an on-camera flash unit to get it just right. I'll include the entire shot so you can see the thread it was suspended from. The combination that worked was to use my SMC Pentax 50mm f/1.4 manual focus lens since the autofocus couldn't lock onto it as it blew around.

Thanks!

Osprey, but clone out that white spot in the upper lefthand quadrant.

Recently, in our news stories there was an article with a photo from a video, of an eagle swooping on the photographer mr Biro, forgot his first name.
It was on the net & viral viewed.
The pic in the paper was not very good, so I googled the Bruce story. I'm surprised if it hasn't been viewed in US & other countries.
The still pic is, I assume, taken as a snapshot from the video, since it was a split second image, early in the video clip.
It is an amazing pic. I've sucked it off the net to share it here. Hope I'm not stepping on toes.
Google "Bruce the Bald Eagle" to see it.

I saw that somewhere else. Amazing shot. Makes me jealous. I still have to get an eagle shot period, let alone one THAT good.

Great shot. Like your 15-85 paired with the 70-300. I envision using my Pentax with 16-45/4 for close stuff and the Canon for far shots. With 2 cameras on a double sling I'll look like a pro. Looks can be sooo deceiving. Lol.

I sometimes wish it was longer, but that gets into a lot more money.

I own the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 USM IS. It's served me well for the past 10 years. The focal length is very useful, the image quality is excellent for a consumer grade lens, the auto focus is pretty fast, the image stabilization works well and it's easy to carry around. But it's an old design, makes a lot of noise and has always felt cheaply made. Plus it's kind of ugly. I'm considering an upgrade to the version II that came out a few years ago. Advantages would be lightening fast silent auto focus, improved IS and a modern sleek design. It can be had right now for $450 ($500 if you include the plastic lens hood with the Canon logo on it..Grrr)

My question is have any of you done the same? Do you regret it or was it worth the upgrade?

I bought it a couple of years ago. It's sharp, and I love the super-fast focus. This is a shot I took the day I bought it.

I took some shots of birds at my feeder today using single point autofocus. They turned out to my liking, mostly. Then I went out to shoot the sunset and never changed the AF setting. I'm sure you can imagine the results. Doh! Aah, well... I've got lots of other chances. It got me thinking though.

I'd be interested in reading about the faux pas of other members. I know mine isn't the most substantial or least common mistake. Please do share if you're so inclined.

I've done lots, I'm sure. The one that comes to mind first was one day when I went to the park, I swear I checked all of the settings to be sure they were the way I wanted them. Took a couple hundred or so shots, got home, and then realized while looking at all of the blue pictures that I'd left the white balance on Tungsten. Then I realized it's easily fixable since I shot 'em all in RAW. Ah, problem solved!

I am going to purchase a 3-stop Hard Reverse ND Grad filter & A 6 Stop ND Filter!
I plan to use these for Sunrises & sunsets! Clouds?
What would I use to make clouds pop? 3 stop or 6 stop ND Grad Filter!
I am not interested on a brand because I already have a recommendation form a Photographer named Art Wolf!

By the way the brand name is X4 from Breakthrough Photography!

Is there a web sight that would help in determining what filters to use with a variety of landscape scenes!

Thank You,
