Hi, I am getting back into concert photography.
I have been recommended by the editor to get a mirrorless camera system.
I have a DX2s which has mirror lockup.
Is it recommended to keep the mirror lockup during the shoot, if it is possible?
If not, may I have a recommendation?
Thank you,
Michael

Have you seen on TV a press conference and heard that deafening banging and clicking? That is the sound of mirrors in DSLR cameras. The mirror is the essential part of the optical system of your DSLR. It bounces the light coming through the lens up to the eyepiece so you can see what you are shooting. When you lock it up out of the light path you can't see anything. So NO you cannot do concert photography with a locked up mirror.
A mirrorless operates on a different principle. It electronically transports the image from the sensor to the eyepiece. There is no mirror slapping around. The new Fuji has a very silent shutter as well. Reports indicate that it is difficult to hear any shutter action. No mirror slap or shutter click is what you want at a concert. Mirrorless is the way to go.

The new fuji xt4 is supposed to be silent, also good in low light. IQ on Fujis is superior.

Not a surprise. They are adding on some of the same things that the 4/3rds photographers liked along with Fuji's innovative slant on them. What's not to be like!

I don't think I will like the fully articulated screen. Am not into selfies, and don't understand why such a complicated screen will be anything but a headache. Tilt, like the XT2 has, is just fine - lets you shoot high and low without standing on a chair or lying on the ground. but twisting and flipping every which way is nonsense in my book.

We may never know. All the more reason to bring more manufacturing jobs home, at least until China decides to grow up and become responsible members of civilization.

I'm hoping they will someday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think that some people DO know, but that information is being witheld from us for obvious reasons. Corona virus disease is found in dogs and we have very effective vaccines for it. It would be a very good candidate for genetic manipulation if one were developing an effective mass bioweapon to incapacitate but not overkill a population. (For instance China would love to have something that could incapacitate Taiwan, so that they could simply walk in and take it over with minimal force. In fact, under the guise of rendering medical assistance)

Boy, you sound like maybe you're a "remainer"? The advantage today of a Japan build is they probably won't be held up by the coronavirus scare, at least not for as long as anything coming out of China. And if they are held up, it's still China's fault due to their dismal health care, and the inherent dishonesty of all Communist regimes.

And, as China is a competitor, to put it mildly, many of us "annoying" Yanks, don't feel especially compelled to have our economy dependent on the Chinese. We didn't kick you guys out so we could be under China's thumb. Oh, and did I mention Communism sucks.

Oh, and if you're an animal lover, look up the issues many of us here have suffered by thinking that pet food and treats manufactured in China are the "same quality" as those made in the good old USA.

To everyone else, sorry for feeding the troll.

Consider for a moment that SARS MERS and now COvid19, ALL originated in China. Why are all these NEW deadly diseases coming from China? Are these GMO viruses escapees from laboratories? Are the Chinese working on bio weapons? I don't believe that animals are developing new viruses only in China. Do you?

What I have not seen is any mention of an add-on battery grip (like I have for my X-T2 and X-T3); this makes for better ergonomics in some situations as well as (at least for those models) a higher frame rate possible.

Has anyone seen mention of this?

Yes there is a battery grip too!

The XT-4 was officially announced on 2/26. I got mine ordered the previous afternoon on the 25th.

Way to go, Joe! It also is supposed to have faster autofocus. Let us know how you rate it when you get it!

The X-T4 now has a 600 shot battery and in body stabilization, correcting the 2 most often mentioned deficiencies. It is now perhaps the sweetest crop format camera of the crowd!

Here is an original from which one of the crops was done.

Now I understand why I should try to get closer and fill the frame!

Why would you crop that image? It is a much better image as is, the body and context of the bird are much more interesting and a better composition than just the head is.

And what theory might that be?

I think he is referring the the continuing belief that the prism allows instantaneous capture but the EVF has a lag. having bee shooting lightening fast puppies for 45 years, using both Nikons with Prism/mirror both film and Digital, and now a Fuji XT2, I think the Fuji has it all over the optical systems. First of all it is delusional to think you can grab what you are seeing instantly. Reaction time from eye to brain to finger involves a lag much greater than a moving puppy, so no matter what viewer you are using you are not going to capture the instant. Continuous burst may do it, and that will work the same with either system. The EVF still has the advantage of letting you see EXACTLY what the sensor is recording as it records it, something a mirror reflection does not. I got this shot before the last drop fell by LUCK, not skill! (Nikon D90)

I would like to get some help choosing a ultra wide angle lens that will take filters , I already have a Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 which gives very good images but won't except any filters because of the bulbus front element . Does anyone out there have any suggestions , thanx in advance.

If you have a mirrorless, the Rokinon 12mm 2.0 is a nice, inexpensive lens - very sharp with very little distortion. If you only have a Canon or Nikon, the 14 mm is just as good. Compact lenses - both. Filter size on the 12 is 67mm. Here is the 12 mm.

It is a difference. Perhaps you haven’t used one, but prism provides a much better view.

I used Nikon SLR's and DSLR's for over 40 years - lots and lots of prisms! I have found the EVF of Fuji sooooo much better, because I can actually see through the sensor. There is no particular virtue in seeing the subject reflected in a mirror when you have no real idea what the sensor is actually seeing.

You can’t shoot what you can see
Even Sony e at 20 frames a second can not follow live action as well as D 300 which only shoots 6or 7 frames you can take a many pic with the 300 but I can see
You can not shoot active any thing with a mirror less camera or at least I can’t

Then you have not tried a recent model Fuji. I shoot puppies - nothing is faster moving than a gang of puppies.

The lower tier Nikons use a pentamirror and the upper tier 7 series use a pentaprism.. The P-mirror in the 3/5 series are smaller and they don't let a lot light thru the eyepiece, on the other hand the Penta passes more light through and they are larger to boot. It's all about the money.....

A distinction without a difference when compared with the Fuji EVF's. The EVF lets you see your finished image before you take it because you are "looking through the sensor" and not at a mirror image.
