Wear a bullet proof vest, handcuff your equipment to your wrist, take your own selfies!

I guess I am missing something, but the above, even if facetious, is a poor representation. I am 87, almost 88, and travel by bus and subway to many parts of Manhattan, routinely, and Brooklyn and Queens often...by myself, usually.
When riding, I do not wear any type of ear phone, or read. I try to maintain situational awareness as a routine. Also, I do not go by myself to areas where I would look like a victim. I did not get to this age by being stupid.
(I never take selfies. The mirror reminds me of all I need to know.)
There are many hogs who live in and around New York City who can help you, but give some hints about your interests and how much time you have.
Feel free to contact me by pm.

I agree with this. I'm 80 and have lived in NYC all my life except for a small stretch in Saigon and later LA. (I preferred Saigon.) I grew up here riding the subway so I have a feel for the system that many do not have. I can't recall ever feeling in danger but then I don't make a habit of using the subways after 11pm except for the times I had to work an overnight shift.

You can walk around Manhattan with your camera but I would suggest putting it in bag of some sort when on the subway. It doesn't pay to advertise! Also, use your head. If someone is disruptive on a subway platform move away. If on a train, get off and switch to the next car - there is plenty of time at stops to do that. I doubt many tourists will be walking around north of 86 St except on Fifth Ave where many museums are. South of 86 St is where most of what you want to see is located.

On weekends try riding city buses as the traffic is light and you get to see a lot. During the week the north/south routes can be jammed in traffic. That's also the same traffic your taxi or Uber is sitting in! Crosstown bus routes always seem to be moving well.

It is a great city but we no longer feel safe going there. Kudos to you for being able to live and work there. I have lots of great memories there, my grandparents lived at 470 West End Ave, then on 36 East 36th. From what I can see now they are very high-rent districts but my grandparents were blue-collar workers.

I ran 3 NYC Marathons in the 90s when Rudy was Mayor and the Yankees were hot. Nothing like running the 5 boroughs, I have some great memories from the Marathon that is the best in the world.

Actually it's a lot safer than when you thought it was safe. In those days the news didn't have the ability, or inclination, to cover muggings and random violence. Crime had been decreasing year by year for quite a long time.

I really like that store! My first purchase from them was a Nikon FM2n in 1995 when they were on (I believe) W17 Street off Sixth Ave. In the 1980s we all went to 47 Street Photo but that place took a bad turn and is now long gone. BTW, I still have the FM2n.

Besides, there is so much to see here that you should create an itinerary for at least a week. You definitely will get the most out of it. Public transportation is easy to use and I frown on taxis or ubers.

There is so much to do here that an itinerary is a must. You will kick yourself if you miss something.

You can apply for an OMNY Card and if you are 65 or older you can pay half fare on subways and buses. With an OMNY account you can use the card or you can link it to a credit card in your digital wallet.

These days I find that, on a weekday, taking a bus will get you around Midtown in about the same time as an Uber or taxi. They all get stuck in the same traffic! Of course, the subway is the fastest way to travel in NYC.

I bought my son an Olympus TG-6 for a first camera. Almost indestructible. Good in water, sand, dust...And a very good suite of built in capabilities. Macro, Micro, focus stacking...pretty good zoom, and a fixed telephoto available.
I like mine, he likes his!

The TG-6 is a good choice. Also quite good is an old Olympus XZ-2. It's 12MP and has an outstanding zoom lens.

Mine just lit campfires. I put it up finally because it leaked lighter fluid so much.

When I was still smoking I retired my Zippo when butane lighters became available. I got tired of years of having a rash from keeping my cigarettes and Zippo lighter in my breast pocket where the lighter fluid was constantly leaking onto my left breast! But I did eventually quit smoking in 1984, after 25 years!

I had recently arrived in Saigon and my roommate was Bill Tekavic. Bill had his camera (classic half-frame Olympus PEN in his hand) engraved previously and took me along to get his radio done. I figured I could get my Zippo done here and asked for just Vietnam, my name and years. When I picked it up I found they decided to embellish it with "Snoopy" on the back. And a very lame Snoopy at that! Another 50 cents flushed down the tubes! I could have replaced it at the PX (and, as it turned out, have it engraved professionally) but I decided that this was a true lesson in relations with the East and worth keeping.

I saw this Wirecutter review when it was last published. At the time I needed more AAAs so I bought the EBL 8 pack from Amazon. I am in no position to rate them vs my supply of Eneloops but the price was nice! Since I make it a habit to check all my battery operated items at least once a year and refresh them with fully charged batteries I will never be able to tell which is better. AFAIK I have never had to discard an Eneloop so I'm not exactly a power user! But I sure have saved money over buying those huge packs of Duracells at Costco.

Call Apple. I see there is an option in the Photo app to change file names by adding a prefix although I never use the Photo app so I can't vouch for what someone else says.

Carson was funny as a stand up on variety shows, but there were others who were funnier. When he took over from Jack Paar I did like his show, especially the first 15 minutes he did to NY before the network feed started at 11:30. I don't think he was noticeably funnier than any of the other comics who were on TV at the time. His best moments were in that 15 minute block to NY before the network show started.

When we first got a TV my father did not like Red Skelton, as he remembered him from earlier days. I kept hearing, in the schoolyard, that Red was very funny on TV. So I coaxed him into trying out Red one night. We then became a Red Skelton family! My father stayed with Skelton all his life but I gave up in my teens when I found him downright corny and just too sloppy sentimental! I still enjoy his early routines such as Willy Lumplump coming home to a home that has been turned on its side!

I would suggest Googling <Shutter Count> for your camera. My Olympus Cameras can be accessed by a series of button clicks that I would not have known if it were not for others who published the sequence.

I realized early on that shooting JPEGs meant I could not change anything since every time I opened and saved a JPEG I was diminishing the quality. My answer was to save as a TIFF file. Then when I could shoot in RAW I realized I was now in control, analogous to the lab used by the corner drug store deciding what my photo should look like.

I was never a darkroom photographer, but now I am. ACR gives me so much control, along with PSCC, plus the ability to add keywords and descriptions to legacy photos. This has opened a new world to me! I'm getting old and I hope I will be passing on my collection of old family photos, dating to the early 1900s, to a new generation. Having the ability to imbed information is essential! I have no idea if they will have the ability to retrieve that information but down the line someone will and it will be there for them.

Nicely done! I get out onto John Finley Walk a lot but not in recent weeks. I like the definition in the hexagonal pavers. They are so common in NYC they we no longer pay any attention to them! You put them front and center!
