what does it take to be a great portrait photographer and take great portraits?

Your question best answered by Annie Leibovitz in the opinion of this Rolling Stone. https://www.google.com/search?q=annie+leibovitz&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS713US713&oq=anne+lei&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0l5.11932j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

So, someone must be seriously ready to set up for studio and remote location shoots, right?

Reading a lot about how good the Gary Fong light sphere is. Does anyone have any insight to offer.

IMHO, it's money I wasted on plastic gizmo junk that doesn't do as good as a simple bounce card, placard, or wall. So mine's been long since religated to the junk box at the bottom of the closet. The only reason I'm keeping it is I may have it gilded and mounted with an inscription quote of W. C. Fields-"There's a sucker born every minute". Want mine; just ask?

I purchased these for a second shooter and backup to the five other Photogenic lights that I use. They're up for sale at a steal for their condition that's 9/10. It comes with all standard items as from the factory; like power cords, 7.5" reflectors, and sync cords. They have under 200 pops, so as used they are as near new as one can acquire. I'm keeping five that have and will serve for many years to come. FYI: These lights can be triggered not only by the sync cord, but more desirably by virtually ANY RADIO TRIGGER. I've used my Yongnuos, though I prefer my Pocket Wizards, as you can "Hyper-sync" beyond X-sync up to 1/8000th of a second to shoot outdoors to stop action and overpower bright sun, too. This is possible with any Nikon or Canon dedicated Pocket Wizard TT5 or TT6. Along with the Photogenic Ion inverter you're able to shoot 90+ frames at 1,000W/s for each battery. With the spare battery (included) that's 180+ frames at any location. This kit is meant to serve at a professional level. I've included links to Adorama's current sale prices.

2 (two) Photogenic PL1250 500W/s monolights with 7.5" reflector, power cords, black bulb protectors, and sync cords
1 Pelican 1550 with foam for the monos
1 16" reflector beauty dish #PL16R (cond. 8/10)
1 16" clip-on diffuser #PL16D + additional white nylon diffuser sock
2 7.5" accessory mounting frame #PL7MF for the included barndoors, snoot, diffuser, (and grids and gel frames that are not included)
2 4-way barndoors #PL7BD
1 5" snoot #PL7MF
1 Ion Lithium-ion Pure Sine Wave Inverter System w/spare battery, charger and carrying case

They're all metal housing is more durable than the plastics. They furnish consistent and reliable performance and I've not had one mis-fire with radio transmitters used. That's why I'm keeping four or five for my use.

Your cost for all the above is $1,686 SHIPPED GROUND SERVICE w/ SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION to 48 STATES ONLY, PERIOD. Payment only via PayPal detailed invoice for buyer and seller protection, please.

The combined retail sale cost for these new would be $2,532, so your cost is $846 less.

If you want an additional monolight you may buy the following one also for $493 added to the cost above:
1 Photogenic PL2500DR 1,000W/s w/reflector, bulb protector, and cords. https://www.adorama.com/popl2500drc.html
It's had more use so the cosmetics are 8, but all functions perfectly.
Due to not knowing how much life the flashtube has remaining I'm including an additional C4-19 (cost $126) FREE.

Please reply with interest by PM ONLY. I will send detailed pics to all serious buyers to address legal ownership and purchase. This is a NO BS BONIFIED BARGAIN and helps me reduce some fat, soooo....?

I here the fear and it's not unfounded. I see the possibility of a scam here, but If there's truly an interest in buying it, then pay through PayPal ONLY after receiving a detailed invoice for it. The PayPal refund is guaranteed if the transaction is not honored. If the seller qualifies for the PayPal account, then that settles it.

Among the UHH members who started out using manual mode either by choice or because that was the only mode that was available at the time. How long did it take you to learn how to use it?
Among those who started out with one of the auto mode (full Auto, P, A or S) how long did it take you to learn how to use the camera in manual?
I am not Chris T but I can still ask survey question can I?

Oh boy, what a great opportunity to participate in an inane survey. I'll participate as long as you promise to knee-jerk react to all who don't play into your simpleminded need for attention by placing them on your ignore list. Please, feel free to start with me, then go up to the search box to read the blah-blah on your DA question.

I use Magic Lantern's AFMA and it works quite well automatically with all four of my lenses: Tokina 16-28, Tammies 24-70, 70-200, 150-600. Best part is it's free and has amazing tools on the menu. If you're not familiar, then you can bone up here; https://www.magiclantern.fm/index.htm

More than two years ago I bought the Canon iP8720 and have printed 400+ 8.5" X 11" to 13" X 19" without a hiccup. At the time it was their newest top of the line prosumer and just over $225. I put it up against the Epson Artisan which I felt was comparable in my budget and chose the Canon and have no regrets. Next printer will be for at least 17" and may very well be an Epson, though Canon's Prograf is looking good. Get the best your budget affords.

I wanna trade up on some of my camera bodies. Unfortunately though, Money $$$ is a major concern. Currently, I have a Canon 7D, which is in good shape, a little scuffing on the body, but the images are still great. I am not sure of the shutter count. I have a friend who will give me $350 for it in cash. Then again, I have a Canon 5D mk i. It too is in good shape. I am not sure what I can get for it, maybe another $350. Finally, and this one is the keeper, a new 70D.

I don’t need 3 Camera bodies and want to get rid of the first 2, but...I want a full frame and crop one too. I have done a little reading and by specs, I like the Canon EOS 6D.

So, my plan is to sell the 7D and 5D, to help finance the 6D.

What do you think about my logic, such as it is?

...aaaannnd, you just gave into what pays off, namely attention. Like W. C. Fields once said, "Anybody that hates little dogs and children can't be all bad". Like either, if you ignore it it will eventually go away; meanwhile you've just fed the fox another chicken methinks. LOL!!!
