CaptainC, Was that snide responce really necessary?
He did not say Professional Portraits. He is simply asking for some general advise. Please cool down.

Snide ResponSe - and yes, that responSe was necessary.
How else will these wannabe's come to realize that photography, like most other venues, is not close to instant success because you have the latest issue from N, C, S?

no it was not necessray, all it does is put people off asking questions, as at least one person has said already, its quite easy to just let a question go if you cant ....or dont want to answer it

Most (if not all) of us that do photography for a living tend to get a bit defensive when someone words a question(s) like this around a title of "Senior portraits", "weddings" or such. Nothing wrong with circling the wagons.....

why would you get defensive?

You want to do professional-level work and you have to ask "what settings?"

If you were ready to do this kind of work you would not have to ask that question.

OK, here is the secret setting....it all depends.

Well, you need to get the flash off the camera, and a way to trigger it, you need reflectors and someone to hold them, you need a few million in liability insurance, a business/tax license. If you expect to get paid for this you should have two cameras. You need to have at LEAST Lightroom and Photoshop Elements and Photoshop is better. You need - probably already have - a computer to handle the retouching.

And you need to know enough about photography that you don't ask, "What settings?"

Hi billozz: I have the 70-200 2.8 usm L series glass and the 1.4 teleconverter and find I use them much less that I thought I would. I find I use my 24mm 2.8 wide angle and my 100mm 2.8 usm macro far more often. You can even throw in the 50mm nifty fifty gets more use than the L glass does. I have found on my 5D MkII I just don't get the reach I expected I would. Let me also direct you to this site on Canon lenses, it is my go to site on just about every Canon lens made. It's written for the biginner photographer and is easy to follow and understand. The site covers lens usage and quality. Hope this helps. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html

What focal lengths do you currently shoot at more than any other?

i have an 18-55 kit and that is on the cam most of the time but i have a 70-300 4.5 which i like to use for candid shots i have a 50mm 1.8 for indoors when the light isnt too good

Make a statement referring to the use of the word as being lazy and refusing to learn proper language would start a nasty reply about being old and refusing to change with the times.

The use of glass has been used even long, I have heard many, many older photographers refer to their lenses as their glass. Actually the gentleman who leads one of photography club calls his lenses "glass", he is in his late70s.

can i just ask what we should call "bokeh" if we didnt call it that?

I hate to tell you this but it sounds like you need to learn the basic rudiments of what you are doing.

I think that's why he asked the question, who knows maybe that's what drew him to UHH. Responses like the above is what makes so many newbies and beginners afraid to ask questions. I apologize Croce but that response just hit me the wrong way. :-(

i dont think ther is anything wrong with croce's reply it is necessary to be frank sometimes and he did put it as nicely as he could, anybody that thinks you can take shots of people moving at 1/25th really does need to learn the basics, tough but true, i wonder if the op thought the comments were un called for.
