Have you considered having it printed on metal or acrylic and mounted with no frame at all? I think it would be stunning.

Well, Rehess, I think the third squirrel left to “give them some privacy”, if you know what I mean.

I think it's absolutely spectacular! There's something about the tire tracks - and of course the receding lines - that make me feel like I'm speeding towards the bridge The ultra-blue sky is a perfect contrast to the white frosted trees. Great impact for me.

I get the same feeling of movement. Well done photo. We had hoar frost here yesterday morning. And it had longer crystals than I’d ever seen - over one inch long in places.

THanks here is another two from that same morning.

I really like that second one. The vapor/spray from the wave is a little clearer. Amazing scenes for a flat-lander like me. I bet you can spend hours and hours shooting and trying all sorts of combinations.

#1 is the star of the show - no doubt.

What an amazing capture with that green backlight on the wave. My eye keeps going back and forth from the green to the soft white misty cap. I’m not sure if that is good or not - kind of having two unusual points of interest. Probably good but it would be interesting to see one with just the green and no fuzzy cap.
Thanks for sharing.

There was considerable discussion regarding ETTR/EBTR in another thread, https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-567016-1.html Although it may have been appropriate, I felt the actual photograph was slighted and decided to post this as a follow-on.

Here are two photographs. The first is essentially SOOC. I simply did a Auto WB in ACR. This avoids a side discussion of UniWB.

On metering the scene, I spot metered the area with the small rectangle. After obtaining the exposure reading, I increased the indicated exposure by 3 stops.

In ACR, I decreased the Exposure, Adjusted Highlights and Shadows Then Whites and Blacks. Yes, there was some burning and dodging. One can see the results in the Final image. I'm sure there were considerable blinkies showing in the in-camera jpg. However, since I do push things, I don't really chimp. I know what I'll see. However, I also know that is the exposure I want.

I expose and process Zonally. There is a good deal of previsualization that happens prior to looking through the camera. The amount of change I do to the exposure was determined by a considerable amount of testing and analysis prior to actually "going to work" with the camera.

There was considerable discussion regarding ETTR/E... (show quote)

My goodness. What a dramatic example. Thanks for sharing. It was interesting to read your primary adjustments in post.

Your final initial image and final result remind me so much of Ansle Adams’ “Moonrise Hernandez” photo.

Yes, thank you R. G. and whoever else helped put this together. I predict it will be a big hit. (Obviously a safe prediction given the variety and quality of the early posts here - great pics and even better discussions.)

Folk, thanks for sharing your images. In the first one, I like the smaller thumbnail, but the download makes the palm fronds almost pixelated. Do you think this is due to 1) shallow depth of field, 2) breezes moving them during a longer exposure, 3) too much of a crop, or 4) something else?

I really prefer your second photo with the horizontal crop. It just gives me a better sense of the moment and place. (Not sure I’m expressing that properly.)

One interesting side note: In your first photo, I keep looking near the upper center where my mind pictures the silhouette of three people in the trees, lol.

Great examples, Richard. The first photo benefits from the shallower depth of field a longer focal length gives. It makes the crashing surf almost abstract in contrast to the sharply defined railing.
Your second photo compresses the depth so the distant city scape keeps some proportion to the ships vs. being distant tiny specks if done with a wide angle. I often see wide angle photos that diminish distant mountains even tho they should be the star of the show.
Thanks for inspiring a discussion.

Edit to add: It would be interesting to know your aperture settings so others might learn when more or less depth of field is appropriate.

Thanks for sharing these, Bill. What body did you previuosly use the 500 on? How does the Z6 compare? Have you tried the various continuous focus modes such as for birds in flight?

Very very well done. There is an unusually good group of photos here in the gallery tonight, but none can top these.
I find it interesting that the first one really catches me eye as a thumbnail, but on download the second one is just amazing. It has such a three-dimensional look.

Great discussion. It made me search some other Angel quotes. One I like is: “A good photograph is knowing where to stand.” I guess I should send my feet to school, lol. Seriously tho, Nightski of the critique forum encouraged me to “work the scene.” Don’t be content with your first shot but look for other angles, different lighting or a different focus. Her advice has helped me, even though I don’t claim to have a good “eye” for the best composition.
I have also found that using live view on a tripod helps me with composition. I feel it has to do with using binocular vision instead of just one eye through the viewfinder. I’m guessing Angel had the ability to see a great photo before he ever set up the camera.
