I'm new to this forum, and I never heard of Lightroom before. Does it do anything Photoshop doesn't? What are the advantages of either?

Thanks.

I have had the fortune of trying and using LR, Photoshop CS6 , Photoshop Elements as well as On Ones Perfect Photo Suite. I have used all these but have narrowed this list down to two that I use most often for the following reasons, I use Light Room for about 95 percent of my Post production work and have grown to love the program. As far as Photoshop CS6 it is a wonderful program in the right hands but unfortunately not in these hands, as it takes a huge amount of work to learn and master the program and all that it is capable of. As far as Photoshop Elements I have never liked the program,,but that is just a personal bias as others just love it, and I am sure you would be happy with it. The program I use the most for what Light Room can't do is On One's Perfect Photo Suite. As I just love it's modular lay out that allows you to enter different modules and gives you the tools that apply only to that module for the work you want to complete, whether it is masking, layers ,portrait retouching, resizing, etc. which all can be accessed from right inside Light Room. There is not one P. P. Program that is the end all be all, but I guess it boils down to which program or programs that you are willing to invest the time to master .This post is just an overview of my opinion and not to be considered as authoritive in any shape or form. So that being said may I suggest that you check out the On One site and add Perfect Photo Suite to your list of considerations I hope that you may find some value in this post.

I download the trial version of LR5 from Adobe. I went into Amazon and found the same software for about $16 less. My question is, if I buy the CD from Amazon, I have to delete the downloaded copy from Adobe, will my pictures be deleted when I delete the software? I would like to load the CD from Amazon and keep the pictures that I downloaded into the Adobe version. Thanks.

Yes your pictures will be just fine. Buy your copy of LR5 from Amazon or any other place you find the best price. Enter the serial number (activation number) from the cd into the trial version that you are currently using. No need to delete or remove the trial version. It will convert it to a registered copy the same as if you loaded the disc
After all that is said and done, prepare yourself for a big update as Adobe will update your registered copy of LR5.0 to 5.1. And again no need to move photos, everything will work out fine.

I use a MAC also and just recently switched to using LR5. And I am glad and better for it. I did use just Photoshop CS6 but now I use it in conjunction with LR5.
If you intend to become serious about your photography why not make the plunge and go ahead and get what the pros use, LR. One really doesn't need more than Photoshop Elements to take your images further, only reason I have CS6 is because of being a Senior Student I got it real cheap. Of course that option will soon be disappearing.
I have used iPhoto, Aperture and a couple others before moving up.

Started out with Aperture then moved to LR 4, now using LR 5, very happy with it. If you take the time to master LR it is time well spent. Also got Photoshop CS6 for about 50% off from B+H on a 24 hr sale they had some time ago. Still trying to master it, as I don't use it that often, as I do 98% of my PP work in lightroom.

Just out for a drive the other evening with my camera by my side and came across this aircraft doing some crop spraying, so I stopped and took a few photos. Hope you like him.

I started out using Aperture, and was not that fond of its interface, using projects, events and albums. Switched over to Lightroom 4 and have just recently upgraded to Lightroom 5, and I couldn't be happier, and have never looked back at aperture. In my opinion both programs are more than capable for your postproduction work.
Apple has not done any significant upgrades to aperture in quite some time, so that might be something for you also to consider, now that it is getting a little long in the tooth. Also I think there's far more tutorial on the web for lightroom than there is for Aperture. Consider downloading lightroom 30 day free trial. If you don't like it you can always move over to aperture. Just one man's opinion.

I generally carry my Garmin Dakota 20 as I use the other features in addition to just collecting a tracklog. I now use the Geoencode Lightroom plugin. This replaced GPisync, which worked great but was an added step.

I did get the Nikon GP-1 that sits in the hot shoe on my D3100. It works ok at best. It has a much harder time acquiring and especially maintaining satellite reception so I almost always have photos without gps coordinates.

In a pinch, I'll use my iPhone to collect gps data but that is a sure way to use up the battery quickly.

I like the idea of having a cheap, reliable tracker/logger to carry when I don't need all the features of the Garmin. What device are you using?

OK. QTravel came with the device, so I thought I'd use it, but maybe not. It would be nice to plot my route on a map, even if I'm not coordinating with photos.

If you have a way of converting your GPS logs to a GPX file format then in Lightroom it will plot your course as well as tag your for photos in the map module of Lightroom.

Thanks, but I read that when I was trying to sort it out. Gibberish on top of gibberish. I'll get back to the QTrack device eventually. It will (hopefully) communicate with a little receiver attached to my camera.

Can you click on the QTravel program and have it run?

I really can't answer that question Jerry, as I use Time Album for my GPS device, and all I use Time Album for, is to convert the GPS track to a GPX file which then Lightroom will read. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I got the same unit last week, and I installed the software. When I run QTravel, I get this message on the screen. I got the key by following the directions, but there is no indication of what to do with the key.

Maybe this link will help.
