Thanks Apple. You have designed a beautiful sleek/thin iMac computer. It looks great in my office. What else could anyone want in a computer. (sarcasm)

I migrated files, settings and things like that from my Time Machine backup over to the new computer. I had problems opening Photoshop. It tells me the license number has an error code. Google came up with several solutions. None seemed to solve this issue. No problem, I have legal install disks and license number. I deleted all Photoshop files using the Adobe Uninstall utility. Next was to insert the first install disk for Photoshop. Mmmm...it’s got to be here somewhere. Can’t seem to find where they hid the darn thing. The new iMac does not, I repeat, DOES NOT have a DVD drive. What???

Please Apple, a little thicker machine would have been OK. After all, I’m not going to take it down to Starbucks and work. It’s is designed to stay in one place. A few extra ounces and a little thicker would be OK.

Good thing I had a “Antique” portable DVD drive sitting on the shelf. I almost sold it at one point thinking "I will never need this thing".

In the future, I think we will see more DVD drives eliminated on new computers. Most software is now installed over the net. I’m afraid that soon software will be by subscription only. Already, Adobe has moved in this direction.

The problem is many users have movie and photo DVDs and want/need this drive.

Photoshop now installed and running.

Ummm Facing the screen, slip your right hand onto the right side facing of the computer.. Feel the two thin slots??? One is for CD other is for Memory card.. Now look behind the computer backside bottom, see where all the port connections are?? I use Youtube to learn how to use my mac when I first bought it.. It's a great computer. Welcome to the new age.......

Memory card slot on the back. No DVD slot. My 6year old iMac had DVD slot. New ones do not.

Would that be because now Adobe software is all in the cloud and all companies will follow the trend? Still... Cannot believe this. My 4 years old iMac has one and she is as good as the day she was born.

That is an understatement, to say the least. Don,t know what Apple is thinking.

External drive, extra $79.00. Guess it's easier to replace this reader writer instead of tearing computer apart to fix..

The new iMacs were designed to permit the addition of custom peripherals via Bluetooth or, hopefully, the Thunderbolt port. The only problem I have with the concept is that Thunderbolt is not yet an industry standard. The only place sure to carry TB disk drives is Apple. No thank you; I'll use WD or Seagates that use USB3 and which, with proper configuration, can be used to transfer data to a Windows PC and vice-versa. Apple scr%#€ed the pooch on this one. Oh how I miss Steve Jobs!

I heard this same gripe when Apple stopped putting 3 1/2 inch floppy drives. Don't try to tell us that you did not know that there was no optical drive when you went shopping for this computer. That is akin to buying a car and not realizing it does not have an ashtray. The future is whatever Apple decides they want it to be, you better get used to it as we are all lemmings falling over the cliff.

Last January I got my 27 inch Mac and bought a portable DVD drive for $39 to have when I needed it. Eight months later I have yet to need the drive (see Apple knows what is best for me).

Enjoy your iMac for what it has not hate it for what it doesn't have, it is probably the best home computer on the market. Fill it up with 32 GB of RAM and you can run LR, PS, and Aperture at the same time while playing your music and have no computer lag at all.

ps, Since this is a new computer don't be afraid to call Apple Help Line for free. I have called them more than once on an issue (which was my fault not the machines) and they have always cheerfully assisted me. Well at least they sounded cheerful.

Interesting in that one of the reasons I still hold onto one of my old Windows laptops is for the 3½" that I still use regularly. It's amazing how many of my neighbors still have old pictures and family trees on a 1.44 mb drive.

You didn't know that when I bought the iMac? Neither my iMac nor my MacBook Air have them DVD drive installed. There are advantages to that

One of the selling points of the new Macs was that the DVD drive wasn't installed because they weren't used as much with Microsoft Office starting the Cloud based software phase. Then the drive was $79 more and USB connected. The Mac was the first to network with telephone wire and then Ethernet (1394) cabling. windows XP was based on an Apple design. thunderbolt was initially designed to become a "universal" high speed transfer medium, but Microsoft found that Windows 7 couldn't integrate it properly. Windows still uses optical drives in large part due to the gaming industry. By enabling online downloads of gaming software GameStop and several other retailers would no longer be relevant. Welcome to the future!

Mine too... I thought the other post saying "no cd/dvd was totally wrong. That's a shame!
