Spent an hour shooting this guy at 400 mm - he was quite far away but still put on a show for me ... the dl is pretty cool

The old Lake Buntzen Power House sits below Bunzten Lake on Indian Arm in Vancouver ... it's really a lovely place to boat up to - stop off and explore (although I think one is not really allowed to) ... anyway here is a BW shot of this great structure built in 1903 - Vancouver's first hydroelectric plant.

I purchased a Sigma 85mm f1.4 for my portraiture stuff - same day shoot down at Lonsdale Quay - I met a busker called Pete - we sat and spoke for a while and I shot some character study pics ... this one wide open at f1.4 ... 1/2000 ISO100 ... it is important to nail the focus :) on this lens ... it is surely to quickly become my fave piece of glass (I don't have the loot to splash out on a Canon f1.2 - and - from what I heard when I did my research - the Sigma nails it in all aspects - I concur)

Thanks for all the comments - I have been an LP record listener since the late 60's (ya Hendrix days) ... and had many many LP's over the years - lots of them got lost (as did many things in the 70's) ... and just recently over the past few years have I started to rebuild my collection - thrift stores are a favorite haunt of mine and I have picked up some real gems - (as in good playable condition) ... I have a fairly good turntable - so hiss's, crackles, and pops are kept to a minimum - and I don't mind spending the extra few dollars for a copy that is in mint condition ... the discogs web site is another favorite place (it's like the ebay of records) ... but recently I have found a record shop really close to me that has reasonable prices and an awesome choice ... so, that is my new favorite haunt.

All those 'useless' records needed to be put to use ... so I came up with this idea ... and got a bit carried away - so now I have 5 clocks and various food bowls littered around ... they will probably find their way back to a thrift store :) ... eventually

There are 3 Stellar's that hang out at our deck ... if I don't move away from the peanuts quick enough they squawk at me totally indignant that I delay their eating experience - they fight (squawk) at our dogs if they come near the peanuts ... I hardly get the nuts down and he (she?) is grabbing at my fingers ... geeez we love them :) cheers phil (the dl shows good detail)

thanks for the feedback ... we have 3 of them come together to gather the nuts ... this one is the most aggressive and generally drives the other 2 away ... but eventually the also get their fill ... here is another shot

These guys were particularly rude today - stealing peanuts right from in front of me off the table on the deck

The dl is worth it ... :)

The first time I went out to the lower 48 was by car in '53 and the first Alcan pavement was when we crossed over the Frazer at Hope..

Please tell me than image is not Hope....

This is New Westminster - the bridge is the skytrain bridge over the Fraser River ... near Vancouver, BC Canada ... we just had a gazillion sockeye salmon come up here ... but they are long gone

Here is an interesting art piece that I saw when I was down-town Vancouver today (normally we try stay away from the down-town core on a hot summer Sunday ... gazillions of tourist ...

Gumhead is a seven-foot tall self-portrait that Douglas Coupland has described as "a gum-based, crowd-sourced, publically interactive, social-sculpture self-portrait." Viewers and passersby are encouraged to apply their own chewed gum to the sculpture so that over the summer months it is transformed, eventually obscuring the artist's face.

I encourage you to download the original and zoom in on the gum ... it's bizarre :) ... enjoy Phil

In my opinion, Phil, 'freezing those flappers' is not appropriate. In order to describe the motion of the bird, some blur of the wingtips is needed. The 'statue' look isn't realistic.

I'm guessing that you were panning the camera, following the flight of the bird which is why the foliage is blurred. Un fortunately, that does detract somewhat from the photo .

Overall, a great capture. Thanks for sharing.

(Some day, I hope to find a hummingbird so that I can try my hand. Went to a place this week that reportedly was a breeding ground for them, didn't see any signs of them.)
In my opinion, Phil, 'freezing those flappers' is ... (show quote)

to each his own ... I have shot quite a few hummers - I have one that I so love it's even blown up and mounted in my living room ... sans statue-like flappers (and even focus is way out) ... I have shot them sitting dead still with so much detail in their feathers it makes them look almost unreal but I have never shot them with dead still wings ... something I really want :) (remember - to each his own) ... I have featured hummers on this forum before - http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-138189-1.html ... and the hummer in this post is pure art (IMHO) http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-134164-1.html

your guess - panning the camera - nope - the blur on the leaves and the forefront Fuschia is because I was shooting wide open (f5.6) at 400 mm and (again IMHO) it sets the hummer apart from the rest of the picture (frames it) ... artistic license :) (I could probably count on one hand how many times I shoot at f9 to f11) ... but, just my opinion - and I value yours to - thanks for the comment.
btw - I can sit for up to 4 hours on our deck to get these shots ... one has to be incredibly patient with hummers.
