My buddy, Bob Harrington, a pro photographer from CT who speaks regularly at the B & Photo "Event Space" here in NYC, has a series of YouTube videos: youtube.com/results?search_query=bob+harrington+b%26h

He recommends speedlights and accessories and in several of the videos describes his portable studio outfit and various lighting techniques including portraits, weddings and glamour.

He has spoken at our camera club and is a great guy who is willing to help others!

This is the best explanation of how to make good Christmas light photos....from the Strobist.

Thanks for the link! It would have have been very helpful a week and a half ago when I lead a combined Park West Camera Club/NY Photo Safari Meetup group to Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY for a shoot: http://www.yelp.com/biz/dyker-heights-christmas-lights-brooklyn

Results are here: http://www.meetup.com/NYPhotoSafari/photos/25803075/#432582955

Not bad from our members with varying levels of skill. Most used auto, "night" setting or trial and error.

This annual photo op lasts until New Years Day or so. I'll probably be going out tonight to shoot the holiday lights of NY's Fifth Avenue stores and Rockefeller Center and the tree. Happy New Year all!

Will the Brother Lazer print 11 x 14?

No, the Brother Laser monochrome printers only do 8.5x11. Available at Amazon, the lowest priced models run less than $80 and $90 (refurbished) with the initial toner drum yielding 700 pages @ 5% while the high yield cartridge (under $50) yields 2600 pages @ 5%. They are highly rated by the reviewers and I concur (have 2).

I have a Canon Pro-100 and a new ink set of 8 runs about $120.
It's an expensive way to print ordinary black & white. This printer was part of a Canon camera/lens/printer/paper promotion which has since expired but I see one or two each week for sale, brand new still in the unopened box minus the bar code required for the rebate, in the NYC Craigslist, anywhere for $130-200. I did buy one of these as a backup.

I'm a few months away from ordering a D7100 to coexist with my D90. With 2 slots on the D7100 I'm paying attention to classes, write speeds, etc. What are the "adapters" mentioned in some ads? Would my existing cards for my D90 work in the D7100 in a pinch?

Yes, your current SD cards will work in a new D7100. Download a D7100 manual from the Nikon website and check the cards they recommend. Superfast cards are a waste if the buffer only has so much capacity.

The "adapters" mentioned might be those that often accompany micro-SD cards for use in phones and tablets. They allow use in cameras using regular sized SD cards or for reading or transferring images or music, using a card reader, for those phones or tablets. I've been testing their usage in my D800 and they work fine. Of course, my type of photography doesn't require speedy cards. The other type of "adapter" allows one to use any SD card in a camera that takes Type 2 CF cards which are slightly thicker than regular CF cards. I have Canons, 1Ds, 1Ds2 and 1Ds3 and a D300 Nikon which can use these cards. Advantages are lower prices as SD cards are cheaper than CF's and available everywhere.

There are a number of different SD cards: SD, SDHC and SDXC and they differ in their capacity and speed. "Faster" cards are needed if you do video; your D90 I believe can use SD and SDHC while the D7100 can use all 3 types.

I hope this info is useful and best wishes and happy holidays and new year to all.

The closest analogy to opening and saving the same jpeg image multiple times regardless of whether any pp has been done on it is making a copy machine print of an original document and then making a second copy of the first copy. Keep making new copies of each preceding copy and you'll eventually get one with broken splotchy type or tones if an image. This is a drastic example. Your jpeg image if saved many times loses sharpness and range of tones and develops artifacts and halos around contours. My workflow is to work on a raw, save as a Tiff to an "Edited" file, go back to the Tiff and and create your needed Jpegs or whatever you need.
