Great set. Not 20 before the eclipse began, my trip from central Wisconsin to eastern Nebraska was for nothing due to cloud cover that moved in. Your set is really very good.
We had rooms booked in Missouri and either N Carolina or S carolina for that purpose

Shot the 2017 eclipse South West of Saint Louis with a Nikon D80 and a Nikor AF-S 300mm f2.8 with a AF-S TC-20E III converter. FOV was about 900mm -+ ... Thinking about the Eclipse next year. I have the Nikor 300mm f2.8 and now have a Nikor AF-S 500mm f4 D.. Will probable put the 500mm on my D500 I am not truly pleased with the sharpness I get with my 2x converter so may not use it but would like to for the extra reach.

Question:Thinking about putting the D-850 on another set of legs with a 17 or 35mm lens ??? Looking for ideas for Time lapse.....
Must admit have not looked in the dreaded manual. Can I program or set the 850 taking an image, say every minute or two and then some how stitch or combine all or selected images in to a single image file. And if so what software might I use?

Images in 2017 were shot manual, spot, 100-400 ISO varying F stops 5.6+

My wife an I planned a trip to Merritt Island to go birding. When the mission was re-scheduled this became our main focus. It is an absolutely breath taking experience to witness first hand. Thhis is my first attempt at something like this, and a little reseaarch on camera settings helped. I always say even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Comments and Critiques welcomed. Gary

Well done Looks great! First try, I am impressed. In my travels from the deep south to Michigan I have tried a couple of times to see a launch but they were scrubbed.

I've crossed the 'Big Mac' more times than I can recall. However, I CAN recall four of those times with great clarity, if for no other reason than the fact that I was crossing on a motorcycle, the last time was in March of 1967 (and yes, it was snowing). As for my most recent passage, this time in an SUV, that was in July, 2021. The picture below was taken after I had crossed it the first time on my motorcycle, in September 1965, on my way to college my freshman year.

Note that when I was younger, prior to the bridge being completed, our family used to go up to the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan on vacation and in those early years, when I was only eight or nine years old, you had to cross over on a car ferry. We did this several times, until the summer of 1958, when we crossed the bridge for the first time. That sure saved a lot of time compared to having to wait for and then travel on the ferry across the the Straits of Mackinac, from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace.

My parents have had a cabin in an old logging camp (about 100 miles north of the bridge) since the 40's, and before the bridge yes the car ferries took you across the straits. During dear hunting season he would have to wait in line for 4-6 hours, The line along Hwy 2 in St Ignas would be miles long and on the south side along Hwy 27 would be longer. I remember doing the ferry perhaps 2 times. It was fun to take naps and picnic in the back seat

Is there a ferry available for those with acrophobia?

Stan

No ferry service available. Some truckers and people in cars will/can not drive across the bridge due to fear, and the The bridge does offer drivers to drive their semi's or vehicles across the bridge.

Fortunately, those bridges with the steel open decks aren't very common anymore. Talk about scary - especially on a motorcycle.

You betcha. I hate to drive on the grates. even in a car you wonder like crazy and loud. One time I was stopped in stop and go traffic and on the grate. I opened the door to look down to see the water. That was scary.. On Monday of Memorial Day weekend you can walk the bridge. Have done that a few times. That is less scarry than driving on the steel grates.

I crossed that bridge towing a 25 foot travel trailer, it was quite an experience ,my wife was scared to death.

Many years ago I drove the bridge in a Toyota micro Mini motor home. It was a white knuckle drive. High profile vehicles have to reduce speed to 20 at about 30mph winds. They close the bridge at 65MPH..

Decent day yesterday, decided to run up to the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan. At the tip of the mitten one has to cross the 5 mile wide, Straits of Mackinac. In 1957 the 26,372 foot Mackinac Bridge opened connecting the upper and lower peninsulas. The bridge is the worlds 27th- longest main span and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.

I will be traveling through the UP next week for about 10 days. Is there any reason to bring a long telephoto (200mm+)? I shoot micro four-thirds.

No not really. When I go to the UP, (30 miles) north of me I would have the 24-120 mounted on my 850 and I would also bring the 70-200 but don't see the need for my 300 or the 500 lens. Just extra baggage.

Thanks so much fellow Hoggers for the wealth of info. Some I knew about, Others I will delve into and do some homework. However knowing where you photogs think are fertile area is a giant step forward. We were down in Orange beach last year for a week and spent much time at the many forts, the beach, some fishing and over to Pensacola. But not that much birding. Time was too short. A month will work out great. Again Thanks to all !!!~
