I would stay away from the 70-300 budget Nikon. I had one and it was sharp at 70mm and soft at 300mm. It was wasted money.
Have you thought about a prime $400-$600 lens. There are some good 35mm to 50mm types that are sharp edge to edge.
Be sure to check the reviews on Photozone.
I bought a used 70-300 VR on eBay, and it's great for my baseball pics! Really pleased
Thanks for the link.
Sets a guy to thinking...

There is a reason sports shooters use a monopod. Take all the weight off you and put it on the pole.
I forgot mine once and spent an 8 hour day handholding the 70-200. Exhausting!
'Exhausting' would certainly be an understatement for me, CaptainC!
I absolutely could not endure it.
Shot a double-header Friday. 34 degrees both games -- BRRR!
Used my 70-300 lens for the 3hr game #1. On my feet all game long.
Wore me out!
Switched to the 2.8 lens for game #2. And took some breaks to sit a while.
Don't know how I would have gotten the game-winning hit with the
4.5 lens.
I have 2 reservations on a monopod.
First, am I nimble enough to follow the action while tied to the pole; and second, would my back tolerate it. I handle the weight of the 70-200 OK when I can keep my back erect. But I won't know till I try it; will I?!
Thanks for your advice.
"Ah, so." (with a Japanese accent)
Now I understand ... kinda...

This interests me because the town next to mine has a team in a summer collegiate league and I'm a season ticket holder. I follow many of our former players who are now in the pros, even a few in the major leagues.
Our team sends players to several summer leagues from coast-to-coast,
more now than in past years.
Good experience for some of the players; but perhaps not all, ha!
We also have a summer team which competes in the NBC World Series in Wichita each summer. It's roster is broader than just collegiate.
We both get to watch excellent baseball; don't we?!
Thank you.
My pleasure.
For sure!

Nice series. Just what I need as I look out on all this snow. I agree the pitcher's delivery is dangerous. I also notice that pitcher and batter seem to be wearing the same uniform. Is this practice? College team?
Yes, Dennis. Pictures from last week's intrasquad games. The team is Southeast Missouri State Univ. in Cape Girardeau. The season is to begin at home Friday. "Weather permitting!" With a forecast low of 7 on Sat. morn, hope they don't play the entire 4-game series. Be reasonable; please!!

This pitcher needs a pitching coach real quick. He is in terrible fielding position, just a matter of time before a line drive will end his career. I have NEVER seen anything so terrible and I watched hundreds of games at college level and below.
Yes, DigitalDon. Scary; isn't it?!!

Very nice images. "Take me out to the ballgame."

Thank you, Jack. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest -- bet I'd enjoy your scenery!
I love an afternoon at the ballpark. Within 5 miles of home;
access to wherever I want to be! Great variety to choose from.
The simple grace of a player running, the challenge between the ball & the player,
the support of teammates for a player, the bike riders in the park,
the complexity of the game. How fortunate I am!
