Over the years I have read a number of pros and cons on this site regarding the use of UV filters for lens protection. Personally, I have always used one, and never gave it much thought. A couple of weeks ago when I was unloading my car for my granddaughter's birthday, my camera bag fell out of the back of my SUV. My lens was attached to my camera. The lens cap broke, and the UV filter was smashed to bits. However, the lens was completely in tact, with absolutely no damage! And, no damage to the camera (which had nothing to do with the filter). Lucky me! I immediately bought a replacement UV filter!

Frankly, I do not want an extra piece of glass between my sensor and my subject when photographing. Used to use them all the time, but after discussing with several local pros, decided I would not use them any longer. I do have total replacement insurance to cover any accident that I may have with my photo equipment.

Just curious, anyone on here use Really Right Stuff photography products? They are moving their manufacturing to just a few miles from me and I am looking at applying for a job they have that perfectly fits my skills.

Expensive, but top of the line quality,, love my ball head.

Those of you that are bird photographers I need to ask a question, do you use a monopod when capturing bird photos your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

tripod with my 150 - 600, monopod with my 70 - 200. Sometimes I hand hold the 70 - 200, but not usually.

Patrick M, I don't know how good you are or how much experience you have but I think stopping the wedding as a guest to tell them to pose for you is totally rude and wrong. The photo may turn out great but to inserted yourself into something where you were not invited and this is just not proper. You seem proud of your actions. I think you should consider your actions and let the pros make poor shots if that is necessary and what the party is paying for. My apology, don't want to be rude but this is my feeling.

Frankly I take lots of photos for my family. I am one of ten children so that is a lot of photos. I would never charge them, they are family.

They will treat me to a lunch or a bottle of wine, but I do not ask for this, they just do it, because, as I said, We are all Family.

I've been using a Nikon D7000 (Dx format) for about 8 years and have accumulated several expensive lenses. I'm ready for a new camera and am interested in possibly one in the Fx format. I understand I can still use my Dx lenses but the Fx camera will automatically crop the frame to the Dx format. If I never buy any more lenses then it would be a stupid move, buying an Fx format camera and using it in a Dx format. At this time I don't know what other lenses, if any, I will want to buy (I'm 74 years young). If I buy more lenses I would buy Fx format of course. I would appreciate some advice, especially from anyone who has made a similar jump (from Dx to Fx). Thank you in advance.

Several years ago, I made the same jump. From the D300s to the D800. Most of my lenses were DX, but a few were FX.
I made the decision to trade-in all my DX lenses and purchase FX lenses. the local camera store gave me 40 to 60 % of original price towards the purchase of the FX lenses. There were five altogether. As I look back, I am glad I did it.

The biggest part of this "puzzle" is why he (she) entrusted that camera to ANY third party at all rather than dealing directly with Nikon USA Service Center in the first place? Way too many intermediaries involved in this issue any way you slice it. Almost sounds as if we are talking about trying to get repairs for a grey market camera?

He took it to the camera store that he purchased it. And it is not a grey marked camera either. But I do agree either and I have told him this three or four times. He should have gone straight to Nikon. But he is hard headed and felt like it was the camera store's problem. I told him he has had it two years and it was not the camera store's problem, but his.

The D5 went out of production at their Sendai, Japan facility in July 2018. But it is still Nikons flagship Pro camera and readily serviced by Nikon USA. This whole story sounds fishy in several ways. I deal with Nikon in LA regularly and parts come to them through Nikon Japans regular supply outlets and repair delays are very infrequent. I just got a D5 back from them 2 weeks ago that had been dropped in a pool and was DOA, they completely renovated it with a new PCB and several other parts and had it back in 13 days, at a cost of $1600. But that was a lot less than replacement!

Wow, I wonder what is really going on? He is meeting with the owner of the camera shop he sent it through this week-end and hopefully we will find out what is going on. The Nikon rep is supposed to be there too.

Get the repair information from the dealer and contact Nikon your self to get more accurate information

He tried that. Nikon would not discuss with him since he did not send it in. They did tell him they have it and are working on it, but nothing else.

I agree that it does sound fishy. But yes, it went to Nikon. The Nikon rep was at the camera store and is the one that told him of their problems with parts.

My friend has a Nikon D5 and it started giving him problems. Some time, it just would not take a photo.

Push the button and nothing happens. Gave him different error messages each time. He when through our local camera store where he purchased it and they sent it to Nikon for repair.

That was three months ago and Nikon has not fixed it. Nikon now says they do not have parts for the D5 and do not know when they will be able to repair it. You would think they would make sure that they could fix their high priced professional cameras timely.

Hope mine does not have any problems in the near future.

That Sigma, along with a few other lenses, are pretty mediocre. Your Nikkor lenses are actually quite good optically, but they are not built to last. Getting a second body is what I would do, but I don't mind carrying a little extra gear - and is good backup in the event the camera dies. What I actually did a year ago was to purchase a Sony RX10-M4, which has surprisingly good image quality, and a zoom that has an angle of view equivalent to a 24-600mm lens. Generally speaking I am not a fan of wide angle to telephoto zooms - they really don't do many things well. But the Zeiss lens in the Sony, and the Nikkor 18-200 VR II are quite decent.

Not sure what you mean by "mediocre", but I have the Sigma 150, 2.8 Macro and the 150- 600 Sport lens and they are both excellent lenses. I have several Nikkor lenses and they all have excellent quality.

Hi all,

I wanted to tap into the collective wisdom of this board and find out what people think is the best diffuser for a speed light. If it matters, I shoot Canon and have 580EXII.

I prefer a light reflector rather than a diffuser. I used to use the Gary Fong Lightsphere, but then after trying the light reflectors, I sold it.

I have a few light reflectors of different sizes depending upon the occasion and location of the shoot.

Hi all,

I will soon be traveling to Northern California for a week and am looking for suggestions for photo locations. We'll have a car and are pretty flexible in where we go. I'd like to stay within ~3-4 hours of San Francisco. We like nature photography and primarily shoot landscapes and wildlife. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Howard

Just drive up the coast on Hiway 1 all the way to Oregon. Hundreds of photo ops on the way.
