Another good free resource is Anthony Morganti's "Mastering Affinity Photo" on youtube.

Here's the link:

I'm with you Crich, Simon Foster's course on Udemy is excellent, and it moves so fast. Mine you, I'm a classroom teacher too, so I usually catch onto things pretty quickly. But I needed to rewatch his a second or a third time to be able to hang onto all the great tips.

I'm still hoping for an extremely detailed Affinity Bible like my Photoshop Bible.

I recently switched to Affinity Photo from Adobe and have found Simon Foster’s course on Udemy entitled “Master Affinity Photo - the tools, the techniques and the methods!” very helpful.

His course is broken down into two sections: The Workflow Section & The Reference Section.

He does not waste a lot of time talking about the superfluous, rather each lesson gets right to the point. The reference section is kind of a dictionary of the tools and how to use them.

I found the course to be a great starting point for me.

Open Office and Libre Office have a presentation module similar to Microsoft Office's Powerpoint. Both are free.

There’s lots to learn in Affinity. I recently bought Robin Whalley’s book on Affinity. It’s organized for a beginner and in workbook format. I got the e-edition and am finding it very useful. The YouTube videos make more sense after nailing the basics.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll take a look.

I purchased a couple of courses from Udemy that have been very helpful.

Simon Foster – “Affinity Photo: Beginner to Pro via Reference and Workflow”
Simon Foster – “Affinity Photo: Raw Image Development”

The workflow course is broken down into two sections – tutorials and reference.
The reference section is great because if you have a specific question about a specific tool he covers it in a short (5-10 minute) video.

Yep! Lots to learn!

Thanks!

Will do, Thank you Crichmond

Do you regret not paying $/M to Adobe?

I will humbly admit to having an Adobe addiction. I’m not sure if the Adobe disease is called an “iitis,” a syndrome, a poisoning, or even a schizophrenia of some sort. I do know that it is a disorder prompting other than Adobe software Intolerance and other options amnesia.

So, yes, it feels good to be off the subscription band wagon!

Thanks for asking!

I recently switched from Adobe to Affinity. My first exposure to Affinity Photo is version 1.7.1.404.

I have found it to be quiet robust and works really well for needs. However when refining a section in version 1.7.1.404 it is very slow. Not simply slow but sloooooooooooooooooooow.

It bugged me so much that I did some research and found that Affinity had received numerous complaints on this issue. They have reverted the refinement selection tool back to version 1.6 in version 1.7.2.414.

Per their website it “is a beta and considered not suitable for production use.”

I’ve installed it and it solved my problem. The refinement selection tool works as it should.

You can read about it and download a copy here:

About a month or 6 weeks ago I bailed from the Adobe. I’ve used Adobe products a long time. Started with Elements 3.0 and Lightroom 3, and have used Adobe products all along until the latest iteration published June 2019.

For me the question boils down to which software is best for me. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

I bought On1 Raw, Paintshop Pro and Affinity Photo.

Between the three I chose Affinity Photo.

It was the easiest to transition into for me. Simon Fosters Udemy course entitled “Affinity Photo: Beginner to Pro via Reference and Workflow” was/is a big help.

Affinity is similar to Photoshop. It uses layers, masks, blending modes, luminosity masks, Photoshop plug ins, macros (actions), etc. The software layout and tools are similar to Photoshop as well.

Happy hunting!

Hi Group,

In an effort to get off the month subscription, I recently purchased ON 1 software. It does everything the advertisements claimed except it is very SLOW in doing so. It is definitely not going to replace PS CC subscription for me. Question: Have any of you switched to Luminar? What are your thoughts regarding that program? Take care & ...

I recently dropped the monthly subscription and have looked at Paintshop Pro, On1 Raw, Luminar, and Affinity.

Affinity (for me) is the strongest candidate because it allows me to use layers, masks, adjustments, and selections much like PS. Affinity also somewhat emulates the PS layout, so tools and adjustments are easier for me to find. Affinity also uses some of the same keyboard shortcuts as PS, which makes the transition easier for me. I've had some help from Simon Foster and his Udemy courses on Affinity workflow, and Affinity Raw processing. I've been able to duplicate my favored techniques used in PS, and my Topaz and Nik plugins work in Affinity as well.

I also purchased ($20) FastRawViewer. It allows me to rate and color code my raw images. And like Lightroom it also allows me edit images in Affinity, or other defined editors. In FastRawViewer I can export to either Affinity Raw, or Canons DPP4. So I like the flexibility.

I also found that ON1 Raw is slow. I have a robust Win 10 machine, and hands down Affinity is faster in opening and post processing images. ON1 Raw, on the other hand has some effects that are very useful to me.

It really boils down to individual tastes, workflow, and opinion.

Tough decision. Wish you well!
