Of course the ball is blurred, it's moving. The players are relatively standing still. With the settings that you gave your dof will be around 42 feet. You could open up a bit to gain a faster shutter speed, but probably won't make much difference. F/8= 33 feet, F/5.6=23 feet, f/4=16feet,
dof is not the problem.

The ball should be blurred to show movement. It would look silly frozen in space, much like wheels on a moving car, if the wheels are not blurred it looks as if the car is parked.

As an aside, if you shoot in "burst mode", you can capture the ball closer to the batter. Maybe capturing the batter making contact with the ball, or whiffing and the catcher catching the ball:)

I did the fast shutter with the Atlanta Braves (AAA) squad in Buford. Used my 70-200 but was sitting at the end of the dugout. Got some great shots.

The EXIF data shows that you were zoomed to 267mm. At f/10 for 267mm focused at 300 feet your depth of field is ~258 feet. That easily covers from 1st to home and beyond. You could open up to f/8 no problem and still have plenty of DOF coverage, Up your shutter speed to 1/1000 or so. Want to take it further? bump the ISO and go to 1/2000

Will try that, it is amazing how you can pull stuff in with this lens. I thought my 300 mm f4 was the ticket, this may be more fun.

98, at the distance you are shooting you could easily use the 2x and just focus on manual using the Live View. No you can't be spontaneous, but just wait for the action to come to you.like anticipate a double play or a slide to 3rd/2nd/home. You just need patience. That's assuming the 2x doesn't annihilate your IQ ! ;-)

Supposed to be in the high 60's Saturday will try it then as it might be too overcast today to get enough light and still keep the IQ

98, I don't see anybody in the stands. Will they allow you to bring a ladder? That would be the way to shoot behind the plate. ;-)
SS

There were people in the stands, but the tailgaters were in right and center field much more fun. Especially the antics of a 130 pound black and white spotted Great Dane. How do college kids afford the upkeep.
Personally I can not use a ladder as I can't feel my feet since I pinched something in my back 4 years ago.
I keep sending the coach pictures so I keep working on a better spot.

As others have said, motion blur.
That is a pretty good promo picture for the lens. I think I need to have one!

It was a good purchase for $700 with a Sigma 2x converter. The converter is worthless unless you use live view on my 5Dlll then it will AF. On the 7D don't even waste your time. The guy I bought it from had it for 6 months and gave up using it on his 70D.

The ball is not out of focus, you are simply getting motion blur. Note that both the players in the foreground ad the signs on the wall are quite sharp so DoF is not the problem. If you want the ball sharper, try 1/2000" speed, that will help. You will have to open up the lens or up the ISO.

Going back this afternoon to try again. appreciate your comments, problem today is overcast so it will be a lot less light than Sunday.

Why were you shooting from so far away?

If you sit in the stands you cannot get at the batter. Right field is a big grassy hill. Beside I just got the lens 2 weeks ago and wanted to see what it could do.

Was shooting a college baseball game from right field fence with my Sigma 150-500 mm ISO 500, 1/800 sec, at f10. If I got the batter in focus what do I have to do to get the ball in focus, at the same time? Is there something I am missing? Distance to batter is about 300 feet Do I stop down more?
Boston you should be so lucky to see the baseball unless it was orange!!

It is about $100 cheaper out of Miami the problem is the 120 mile trip from the Keys.

Definitely bring the 24-105 and the 150-500 lenses. Not sure which camera to advise bringing as I only have the Canon T3i and the Canon SX50. You might check airfare out of Miami as the fares will be cheaper and have more flight options than Key West. You will have many great photo ops on your boat trip down the IC and you will want your long lens to capture some of the awesome sights you will see along the way. Then the 24-105 will be a great walk around lens for when your in Key West or other Ports of Call on your way down.

We are moving my brothers sport fisherman from Morehead City to Key West Fl for a few months. Trip is roughly 1000 miles along the Inter-coastal Water Way for about 10-12 days. The question I am having relates to which camera to bring. I have both the Canon 5D lll & a 7D. Do I just bring a 24-105, or a 70-200, or my 300 mm, 1.4 T/C or really load up with the 150-500 mm. Or just bring my Sony Nex 3 and keep the good stuff out of the salt air? The problem is flying to NC and flying back from Key West with what ever I bring. Has anyone done this trip? Trying to keep the weight down. What away to spend the Ides of March!

Thanks. I will have to look at the Tamron, and use the Sigma 2x on my Canon 300mm L lens. I still want the 1.4 for the Sigma 150-500.

Purchased on web 6mo. old Sigma 150 500 mm with Sigma 2X converter.
The 5D with lens and 2x would not AF except in live view with spot metering. Switched to the 7D would not AF. Switched to my Canon 1.4 converter on the 5D with Sigma and focused fine.
The rub came in as the Sigma 2X would fit my Canon 300 mm L but the Canon 1.4 converter would not fit the Sigma 150-500.
Why not?
The clearance was very tight and I do not force things. (It gets expensive)
