Sigma 150-500 w/Canon 5Dlll or Canon 7D & 2X Converter

Purchased on web 6mo. old Sigma 150 500 mm with Sigma 2X converter.
The 5D with lens and 2x would not AF except in live view with spot metering. Switched to the 7D would not AF. Switched to my Canon 1.4 converter on the 5D with Sigma and focused fine.
The rub came in as the Sigma 2X would fit my Canon 300 mm L but the Canon 1.4 converter would not fit the Sigma 150-500.
Why not?
The clearance was very tight and I do not force things. (It gets expensive)

The Canon TC has a tab that prevents it from fitting many aftermarket lenses. The Sigmas will universally fit the EF mounts but may have contact between elements on certain lenses.

Don't feel bad, Nikon TC's won't mount on Sigma lenses either.

Canon and Sigma TC's are proprietary. Meaning they are designed to fit only certain lenses. This doesn't mean that they aren't interchangeable at times. I recently used the Sigma 1.4 X TC on my old Canon 100 – 400 mm lens and it autofocus fine. The only thing you can do is try them and see if they work.

If you're looking for a good third-party TC that works on most lenses take a look at Tamron. It seems to fit almost any lens I have tried them on and works fairly well.

Here are a couple photos taken using Sigma 1.4 X TC on my old Canon 100 – 400 mm lens.

NOTE: any TC that works with the lens, even if autofocus works, the AF will slow down a little.

Thanks. I will have to look at the Tamron, and use the Sigma 2x on my Canon 300mm L lens. I still want the 1.4 for the Sigma 150-500.

Does the Sigma 1.4x TC work with the Sigma 150-600mm Sport and still have auto-focus?

It does on the Nikon D810, D800, D750 and D7100 that I have tested so far. Also the combo will AF on the Canon 5D3, 7D2 and 6D. Not on any other bodies I have tested so far.

That's good to know, since I have the Canon 6D. Thanks for this information, MT Shooter.

You will need to use spot focus and back the zoom off to about 400mm to actvate the AF, once its working you can zoom back out to 600mm and it will still AF.

That is a unique situation, but it's worthwhile as long as it works. I read somewhere that you want to keep it at f/8 or less, but I don't know if this applies to the Canon 6D, concerning the auto-focus.

Yes it does. Thats why you have to zoom back to 400mm, to get back to F5.6 from F6.3. With the 1.4X TC costing you one stop that will put you back at F8 net, where the AF sensor is capable of acquiring focus.
