It would appear that PK Photography came up with the solution to your original question, best of luck.

Hi,
I wish I could use daylight but not allowed to take this priceless album out of the library to do so - it is usually under lock and key as it is very rare. Also, I cannot scan the pages as the book can only be handled by two KC staff and they don't have the time to scan the number that I would want. Thanks for the tip about using tripod which I can easily do and set myself up in the right position over the desk. It is the fluorescent lighting all over the ceiling which makes it difficult to find a suitable desk for copying. Annette

If the album is so valuable that it cannot leave the library, and only two people on Planet Earth can handle it, maybe they should give serious thought to backing it up electronically and make some exceptions to their rules. These are pictures of dogs, right?

Have you tried a polarized filter to cut down on the reflective glare, you will have to increase your f/stops by 1 or more though.

Hi, This is my first post on this site. I am a dog lover and have three Saluki show dogs; they are a very beautiful breed and great to photograph. I am a historian and visited the Kennel Club London UK to take photos of the pages of a 1920s album on the first Saluki Kennel to breed a champion Saluki dog. I spent all day in the Photo Library but the results were spasmodic in that several photos came out washed out by the artificial lighting in the ceiling. If I used flash, then this reflected in the photo, so my husband held up a piece of white paper to try to diffuse the light with a certain amount of success but not perfect. There was no natural light to be able to use. I have a Nikon D80 with Sigma DC17-70mm lens. I wish to spend another day hoping for better results in order that I can write an article for our Saluki Magazine with illustrations. Any advice please? Annette

Thank you I did enjoy the discussion with you, and yes I would like to place hire in the contests, but voting for myself just seems wrong.

I totally understand your point. Sometimes debating an issue is good for the mind and body. I'd like to debate with you a little and I'll pick a side. But please understand, I'm not trying to say you are wrong, I'm just throwing out some other ideas.

By entering a contest aren't you selfish because you want to win or place highly? If not, why can't you vote for yourself if you honestly feel your shot is worth the honor because of the quality. You worked hard learning the craft. You worked hard to earn the money to purchase your equipment. You worked hard getting the right shot and using all of your knowledge to do the best job you can so it would be worthy of entering the contest. Aren't you hoping to win or place? Is that selfish?

I have had the same thought but from 50th say to 25th, but then the real photos that should be recognized more or being cheated out by my selfishness.

Well, then I'll throw a wrench in the fire and you may change your mind, but hope not. When I am competing I tend to not vote. But I did notice that if I had voted and put all my power into the one vote on my self, I would have gone from 3rd to 2nd and does it really matter if you feel your shot is pretty good?

Thanks for letting me know that, so everyone could just vote for their own photograph and you would have 200 entry's with one vote each, a 200 way tie. My only issue with this is that dosen't do the more photographic photos justice.

Can you vote for your own photograph, I have noticed a lot of one vote entrees with a full share of the vote. And I have noticed photographs below them with 3 or 4 votes. It would appear that the ones with 3 or 4 votes did not vote for their own work or at least voted for others as well. Just wondering, regards Markymark.

Yes you can vote for your own photo. Should you? That's another story. You can also vote for more than one and if you do then your vote starts to get split. So if you vote for 3 photos each one gets .33 added to it instead of 1 full vote. So yes some people may be voting for only their photo and others may be voting for their photo and others as well and splitting their giving them less "points" I guess you would say.

Lumiquest and several other detachable holders are avaiable from Amazon, Ebay, B&H and Adorama. BTW the technique is called Cross Polarization. It works great on oil and enamel paintings, food photography and revealing stress patterns in IM plastic.

Thanks that is exactly what I wanted to know and buy. P.S. what would the best way to attach the gel to the strobe be, maybe velcro?
Danilo wrote:
You've got the right idea, Marky. Without first polarizing the strobe light, putting a polarizing filter on the camera will do no good!
You can get polarizing "gel" filters and cut them to size (or not) fairly reasonable (see link). Check it out!
There are other suppliers, this is just one of them.

Can you put a polarized filter in front of a strobe light, with a polarized filter on your camera lens to convert the reflection to polarized using the family of angles. Then taking the shot to have a photo with minimal to no glare. If so what is the best way to do this without breaking the bank for the polarized filter, for the strobe.

I don't know what that is other than maybe we're just getting ripped off. I just can see a reason why items like film or filters need to be twice as much in Canada.

I've got family (in-laws) in Calgary so I'm down there all the time. Vistek is usually my choice down there.

For pricing, it depends on the item. Some items just are much cheaper to ship cross boarder - especially with the dollar at par. I still don't understand why Canadian retailers are ripping us off so bad on some items. Yes, I do understand cost of business is a bit higher here (taxes), but when we can be competitive on so much else, it doesn't make sense.
