Canon EOS 40D + EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens
1/2000 (to freeze the spray) @ ƒ/5.6 and F=260.0 mm
ISO 400

There is a fair ammount of Ping with this image to bring out the light.

There was a strong of-shore wind blowing.

Would you be willing to help me with the "flat" lighting? How do I improve? I will be going to San Diego and will give the waves another go. I would love to find some surfing waves to give it a better try. Thank you for your tutoring!

Thanks.

This was shot from an eastern beach around dawn. I was standing on the beach (I am very conservative and don't like getting wet whaen using a camera).

This is awesome! Would you share your settings? I think I have been using too high of SS. I am loosing the motion

For me it is mostly two things;
#1 Light
#2 Composition

With the first two the lighting appears a bit flat and the POV makes me feel a bit dettached.

With your permission I can post an example of what I am talking about

Please post and example. Thank you.

I have been at the beach all week. I have taken several wave photos. I am lost as to what is the correct composition. Other than getting deep into the water and catching the wave just as it starts to curl so I can see the curl I am not sure. I am just not brave enough to get in there with my camera and give it a try. My knees were it today. Please comment and let me know your opinions.

I was up in northern MN hoping for Northern Lights. That was a bust. But when a bunch of needy photogs get together, we can figure something out. I had never done this before, had no idea what it was all about. Went to a quick class on what was going to happen. Thought these folks were crazy. Had the absolute best time. I am not sure I did the best job I could have done, but I blame it on not knowing what I didn't know. Again, what a blast and want to do this again and again.
If anyone has pointers on how to do the photography part better please let me know.

Very nice. Crisp and colorful.
They visited often early spring. Not visiting as often now.

That was the culprit. Thank you for replying! When our cameras don't work this becomes a great support group! I moved away from the ledge!

I have Canon and Sony cameras, and sometimes the same thing happens to me. Inadvertent actuation of the appropriate wheel has been the culprit in my case.

Thanks for your reply. That was the first thing I checked!! Changed lenses to make sure connections were good. It was that bracketing button!

Make sure wheel is actually in detent, not just almost there when you make your setting.
keep your fingers clear of the wheel after that.
Verify setting before shooting.

A good cleaning is in order. Thanks for getting back so quickly yesterday. Grandkids were here. They would t allow me to panic about my favorite baby! So it waited until this morning.

uote=photon56]The only think I can think of to cause this is the command dial has some dirt in the contacts causing it to change settings. Maybe a good cleaning is in order.[/quote]

Thank you!!!!! I have done many crazy things and this was a brand ew one for me. You are very correct.

You accidentally have bracketing set on. I've done it twice. Look in your manual for how to take it off. It involves hitting a button on the front left of the camera while spinning the shutter dial and looking at the display until it's off. I have the D610 so it's probably slightly different, but I have to look it up every time anyway because it's so random.

I have a NikonD7100. In manual mode it is jumping shutter speeds. For example it is set for 400 after the shutter release it either jumps high or low. I have never experienced this issue. I am searching for the manual. Hoping there is experience out there that can talk me off the ledge!

Thanks for looking. They were a source of entertainment for a couple days. We think there were 4 sets, 2 with young. Love the sounds when they all get going.

Spent a week in northern MN last week. No northern lights, smokey haze seemed to mute most things out. So when that happens - get in the boat and see what happens!
