Huge amount of color noise. Nice shot though.

The stars demand as fast a shot possible 15-20 sec. and high ISO. Even then I still get the star trails. The noise I induced by sharpening it.
Here it is without the noise. Not as dramatic.

At low ISO the D600/610 are terrific. Df/D4 magic is at 3200 and up.

The lower resolution of the Df is also a great match for older lenses which might not have sufficient resolving power for 24 or 36 megapixels, but look fantastic with 16.

OK here's the D600 at 6400 ISO

[quote=asiafish]I've read many similar stories and that is why I narrowed my choice to the D610 and Df. I ultimately went with the Df because of the sensor, and what a magnificent sensor it is.

Here is what a Nikon D600 sensor is capable of
Time 04:59 AM, no direct light, no flash only ambient city lighting. I could just see the shed and nothing on the far right side.
ISO 800
SS 15"
Lens 24mm

I have a D7100 and now want to expand to a Nikon FX. I have been reading about the new D750 but not sure how much I would miss the AF-on button. I would like a body whose hardware handles like the 7100. Being the amateur that I am I want to stay under $3500 (body only). With certain I want one that I will be happy with for several years and don't want to be wishing to upgrade anytime soon. Thank you for any advice that you could give me.
I primarily enjoy landscape and nature shots and will use my 7100 for macro.

It does not sound like the D8xx is what you're looking for at all.
The D610 & D750 at 24.3 MP have basically the same features as the D7100.
The D750 will have a couple of extra nice features from the D810.
You can pick up a D6xx and a couple or 3 nice Full Frame Lenses for the $3500 in the budget.
Just some alternatives.

I am considering buying a Nikon D-5200 and cant afford multiple lenses right away. What order would you purchase lenses. Is it ok to buy lenses on Ebay?

Thanks

The Basic Lenses for Nikon D5200 are the 18-55mm and the 55-300. You'll get really good coverage for $350 or so. And yes I buy and sell on eBay all the time. I have always got and sold exactly what was stated in the ads. Good luck.

Pretty sure you didn't shoot this from inside LA.
I've been there and I know its as bad and worse than Albuquerque.

Nice shot though.

Yes, LA is 170 miles in the distance. Inside LA the only thing you can see is the Moon.

Not in a long time. I need to go up and shoot some shots of the Milky way over the canyon roads up high. So much light pollution from all the areas around it though.
Have to get far away from Albuquerque to be happy.
I really like shooting at the VLA.

Here's a shot with Los Angeles light pollution.

I have posted a few on this forum.
I am slowly getting better and better at this astrophotography game.
Some of my best shots have been with this combination but I am getting good results through my 8" Celestron Ultima PEC 8 as well.

From old to new the transition has been pretty steady.

I like your shots of Saturn, Jupiter & Stairway to Heaven , I've started shooting thru my Meade 8" I just got but Saturn and Mars are so low on the horizon, far away and sit right over a Shopping Center.
I am going to see if I can get some shoots of the moon tonight. Do you ever go up to Sandia?

A refurb or used d7100 could be found for under $800. If I were a birder on a limited budget that's probably the body I'd start with.

I found my Crop Sensor D5300 would not give me the crisp clear shots I want at long range.
I moved to the D600 Full Frame with the same Lenses and got much improved clarity in my shots.
Nikon D610 24.3 MP $1400.00 and the Tamaron 150-600mm F/5-6.3 VC Di USD Lens $1100.00. Just $500.00 over budget.

Thank you,
It's a little bit off due to clouds.

I know what you mean I live on the Calif coast so I rarely get a good crisp clear shot.
Do you have more Astro Photos? That is a great Lens you have.

Thanks for the info Craig. BTW is the part that attaches to the Nikon a bayonet mount that I just put on the camera like a lens? Or does it attach some other way? When I went to the eBay link, it did not look like a bayonet mount. Thanks, nervous2

I did some more research and found the Meade part
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141250137262
And the Nikon Adapter. I just bought 2 more for my other setups.

And the You Tube Video

The first 3:38 is what you need to know. Don't worry about the eyepiece adapter.
This should be what you need if someone else knows something different Please setup!!!
Good luck and I too am looking forward to the Oct. Eclipse

The settings change with the speed of the aircraft. (I should remember to include metadata with the my shots). Unfortunately it was hazy due to fires in our foothills and it was a completely cloudless sky (boring)! The show didn't start till noon so the sun was straight overhead and bright. When shooting propeller aircraft I shoot as slow as possible, 1/60 while tracking the plane in flight. The propellers are a blurred which is the perferred way to shoot them. Otherwise they look like they're not moving at all. I increase the shutter speed to see more of the blades. You have turn yourself into a tripod and keep the camera as still as possible while panning and shooting. Jets you can shoot alot faster 1/200. As mentioned earlier, I wished I'd had more time to practice with that lens.

Ah I see what you mean here's one I shot yesterday, it does look very static. Thank you and some awesome shooting.
