I am considering buying a Nikon D-5200 and cant afford multiple lenses right away. What order would you purchase lenses. Is it ok to buy lenses on Ebay?

Thanks

I think it meets the OP's needs. He listed them in order of purchase? Am I right?

Start with a basic lens, the 18-140mm if you can, or stick with the 18-55mm. Figure out how you shoot, what you can't shoot because you don't have the right lens, and what results you like. That will help guide you to the next lens which is best for you.

The issue isn't buying on Ebay, it's buying from a reputable dealer. If the lens has VR, I would want the Nikon USA warranty so it could get repaired if needed.

The OP is buying a $500 DX camera, and the suggestion was to spend $7000 on FX lenses.

Yes I don't have money like that for lenses. I want to be able to do zoom and basic shots. Can only afford a couple of lenses to start.

Just start with one lens. You can do amazing photography even with an 18-55mm, though a slightly longer lens like the 18-140mm gives you more options. Many really like the 18-300mm, but that is almost $1k. The 18-55mm is $100 and the 18-140mm is $300 as packages with the camera.

the 18-55 is a good place to start and figure out what you want. It's a kit lens, but pretty sharp.

Or perhaps the 18-140. It's a bit more expensive than the 18-55 but it is more appropriate for portraits of kids, friends, spouse.

Get either of these and spend a couple months with it, while you figure out what you want out of your camera. Perhaps you'll want more reach. Perhaps you'll want wider apertures.

But buying lenses for YOU to use based on the advice of someone who doesn't know you or what interests you has a 50% chance of disappointing you.

The D5200 matches up extremely well with any of Nikons longer DX zoom lenses. Look at the 18-105mm, 18-140mm, 18-200mm, and 18-300mm lenses. Pick a range and a price point and you will be happy with any of these choices.
Ebay is a crap shoot, you take your chances on any anonymous sale regardless of feedback ratings.
Good luck.

Note that the 18-55mm/18-140mm lenses are $100-200 cheaper if bought with the D5200 (Nikon D5200 with 18-140mm VR DX vs Nikon D5200 + Nikon AF-S DX 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G VR).

I was in about the same boat. I had an 18-55mm kit lens that came with my camera. I then purchased a Nikon 55-200mm VR. Then I got the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX. So far they are working out pretty well for me. I never use the 18-55 anymore. It really depends on what you will be shooting, but the 35mm is my favorite all around lens (about $200). If you prefer a zoom, get the 55-200 (about $250). They both take the same 52mm filter which is a plus in my book. My wife has bought lots of things on Ebay (small items) and hasn't had any trouble, but I hate to say every offer on there is a good one. I just haven't had much experience there myself. :)

Don't forget to look at 3rd party lenses as well or even used lenses. I got a gently used Nikon 55-300 on Craigslist for $265 a year ago when the new price was $400 and it's pretty nice. I also got a new Sigma 18-250 for a walking around lens for $350. Even though zoom lenses have their sweet spots and not so good areas, Lightroom can do a lot to make up for a particular lens' peculiarities. I know I need to round out my lens collection with a few primes, but having a walking around lens will help me see which focal lengths I tend to use the most and will make a buying decision easier when the time comes. You don't have to spend $7000 to get in the game. Good luck...

18-105 or 18-140 great every day lenses
Then the 55-300 for birds, wildlife and that extra reach...
