Solar filter, and spring for a high quality one.
The sun through your 8" will do a LOT of damage.

With that set up and a filter you should be set.

We're planning on going to Oregon for the total solar eclipse of 2017.

Thanks GT I know you won't let me get away with anything stupid. And thanks to everyone else's help.
I've told myself I wouldn't be crazy enough to look at the sun through any glass but I think I'll go ahead and spring for a good filter for the 8".
See that way I can get in trouble Day & Night for 'obsessing over that telescope'.
Craig
PS: If anyone shoots the sun please post and tell us how you did it???

I know the feeling. I have the remnants of a huricane heading my way. How's that for a door slammer? Remains to be seen but looks grim.

I am climbing the nearest mountain and it will be clear. But fogged-in where I live. Good luck everyone.

I am considering a refurbished Nikon D7100. However, I am concerned that I may get one with a high shutter count.

I contacted both Adorama and B&H to ask this question. Neither would say that the shutter was replaced. Adorama said that the count was zeroed, B&H said that it was not.
Any advice that I just buy a new one, or "that's what you get when you buy refurbished", or similar responses are not helpful and are not appreciated. If you have any positive viewpoint to add to this topic, I would be glad to hear it...Thanks in advance.

Hello Craig,
Thank you for contacting Nikon and to answer your question - no. We do not reset the shutter count of the cameras during the refurbishing process.

Thank you for contacting Nikon and have a wonderful day.

That is a really great shot of the fence. Sometime in the next 3 months I plan on getting the Tamron 150-600mm.
I hope it will get the Deep Space shot I want with the 2x and 3x TC's I have.
Please post your shots here. Would like to see your work Bruce.

Last nights work and please don't make fun of the Collimation I'm working on that today. It's way out. But I'll get there.
Craig
Start a post with your Tamron 150-600 I would really like to see what it can do in the hands of a regular Joe like us.

Just saw your post about two months late... I have an old Dynamax 8 SCT scope and use it to take Moon photos but lately I have been using my Tamron 150-600mm with double-stacked Kenko Pro TCs for moon shots... I did use my scope to take a photo of a distant chain-link fence, the bird flew away before I had it focused, just to see how it would turn out... I am wanting to use it for distant bird shots but haven't done so yet... the birds would need to be relatively stationary to get their photos... I would need to have a good vantage point to do it... I haven't had time to do it yet but hopefully I'll try some shots next year... I have a few ideas where I could go to test it out... have you done anything else with it since August?

Oh, I have no intention of leaving. I know that topics sometimes take on a life of their own. I got the info I needed. Whatever NIKON sayd is of academic interest, but has no bearing on me at this point, since I already resolved the issue to my satisfaction when I figured out that most refurbs have not had a long life (statistically)....Cheers!

Good choice these things can turn into just about anything George.

You forgot the Sony A77II, which blows the 70D out of the water and will blow the 7DII out of the boat.

Canon has been foot-dragging for years.

I guess being #1 in market share PREVENTS innovation, and leads to folk being "fat and happy." :(

Really Simple.... Canon spends money on Advertising, Nikon spends money on R&D Technology.

Not an issue anymore, however I would never attempt this on a modern zoom lens.[/quote]

I know now I have a Nikon 55-300 in pieces now trying to clean it up.

Yes it was HOT and it's still 63* outside. Could not play with my dog he just ran back in the house.
3:30 AM up to get shots of Orion and Jupiter and lite overcast moved in just as I was setting up my camera on the 8". 5:30 AM just gave up.

I am having an issue with my tracking gears.
I'm working with rod's blog to figure out the issue.
He's done more with Celestron SCT'S than most.

May be you can help me? I get a gross Aberration with my Meade 4000 f/6.3 Focal Reducer/Field Flattener, SCT threaded

Moisture in the air.

Most lenses are not air-tight... especially zooms. Moving the lens sucks in air that contains fungus spores. Those spores hatch inside the lens and the fungi feed off whatever they can find, creating haze.

Prevention?

Store your lenses in a container that has some type of moisture removal... ie a plastic container with packets of desiccant included. You can buy those desiccants from Amazon. I use the ones designed for hearing aids. (My youngest granddaughter is deaf. I buy her Dry Briks in bulk.) This system is a must in a humid place like Florida.

Thank you ODDJOBER & CHOLLY
I am fortunate I live in SOCAL with 40 to 50% humidity but I don't want to take any chances either. I'll check out Amazon.
