Get a field manual for your D610. It explains a lot more than the manual in plain English. Find it at Amazon. Great investment because you have an amazing camera that'll give you "results" when properly used.

Good call Don, I use my D600 Busch's Field Guide all the time.
It helps relieve me of my ailment, 'I think I know'

Why not read the manual (available for download from Nikon if you don't have one) to find out!

But what it says is "photographs taken at shutter speeds slower than 1 s will be processed to reduce noise ...", and as far as I know that is true for all Nikon DSLR models.

Thank you for answering my question and letting me know questions are not to be asked here opn UHH.

[quote=Apaflo]Get out the fine manual for your camera, and look at page 242.

The top of the page has a section about "Long Exposure NR". That's one thing.

The top section talks about a method of reducing "hot pixel" noise caused by heat generated during a long exposure time. It takes a second exposure and subtracts it from the first. That doubles the processing time.

What does the Camera consider a ''Long Exposure''

When your images show noise that bothers YOU.

Not as short answer: :-)
This will be a case study - I never use in camera NR. Not that it doesn't work, it does work, but I do a lot of astro shots. Some of which are LONG. I can't use NR reduction on really long shots (the exposure time is doubled) or I only get 1 or 2 shots per night. Also I can't use NR for start trials, because even though they are relatively short exposures (30 sec - a few minutes) there will be an equivalent gap in the trail.
So instead of making sure I turn it off - I don't and ruining a night shoot, I choose to only use NR once I've got my images on the computer.

At what point in PP and how much NR do you use?

This is a very poor hand held shot of the full moon out in Mesa, AZ. The atmospherics were just right to form a moon ring. I believe this is due to ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. We were experiencing SW winds coming up from the Gulf of Mexico laden with moisture from a hurricane coming ashore.

This effect can also happen to the sun. Some call it a "Sun Dog".

If anyone has other information on the cause of the ring, please add your thoughts to this post.

Hi Kingmapix, here's a Double Sun Dog I thought you might be interested in. Just shot it 5 min ago at the Central Calif Coast.

PS: I just found several dust spots on my sensor

Here I am lamenting a few days of solid cloud. I like fog but really, 87 of 90?
Wow..

Finally got some clear skies during the heat wave and expect more this weekend. Clear days, foggy nights is the norm here in the summer. Winter is my best seeing.

Yes you don't exactly expect Moon Dog Ice Crystals over Mesa AZ. in a Gulf originated storm. In Santa Maria, CA. we see this in Jan or Feb.

Nice shots. Is the 1000 mm a mirror lens?

Thank you astroturf
Yes it is a Russia Mirror Lens, it's built like a T-34 Tank. No way I could afford a 1000mm Prime!!!

We're planning on going up to Oregon for the August 2017 eclipse.
I doubt I'll be around for the one after that :-)

Here's a link to NASA's eclipse info.

Once you get your filter, you can practice with getting sunspots.

Looks like you had clear weather for the eclipse.

I went out and watched, didn't take the camera though

Thank you GT it was a lot of work but it was a blast up on Figueroa Mt.
There was only 2 couples up there for a romantic night. But of course in middle phase I could see Orion Nebula so I shot it too.
