One thing about some of these old movies - they are very dark. I mean in terms of lighting, not the mood. I think that's because they're old and not restored.

Many of the "recovered" films are composites, in a sense, of what could have been grabbed from all sorts of sources. The major problem is that many of the films made were never intended to be reused. The idea was that there were many new sources expected back when. Add to this is the great loss when the warehouse fires holding a lot of the originals got destroyed. E.g.:
I have read where many Laurel and Hardy silent flicks were found being viewed on the big screen in Nepal as late as the 1970s. These were some of the films that were brought back and reworked.
