I haven't flown since I retired 17 years ago, and I haven't missed it at all. After reading about all the hassles other people have had over the years, I doubt I will ever fly again unless I absolutely have to. I always preferred to drive anyway because I could carry extra "stuff," and can stop and go when and where I want to.

There was an interesting thread about a month or so back in which we (the viewers) were asked to comment on and critique a photograph by Ansel Adams (Moonrise Hernandez New Mexico), but with the stipulation that we should treat the photo independently of anything we know about Adams, etc. That was a tough assignment since, among other things, Adams is a bit of a god here on UHH, and because the photo is so damn famous.

I'd like to try this again but with a far lesser known photo, by a photographer whom I've never heard mentioned on this site (so may be unfamiliar to many here). It won't be completely anonymous I suspect since I'm sure some of you will recognize the photo, or may recognize the style of the photographer (especially if you're a street photographer). If you do know the photo and/or the photographer, please don't drop a spoiler on the thread. I think the exercise of having a blind critique is a really good one and I'm hopeful we can learn from it.

You can see that the photo breaks many of the rules of photography that we've had drilled into us, but we also know that it's okay to break the rules if you need to in order to get the result you desire. How do you rate the rule-breaking on this one? Thumbs up or thumbs down? And why?

I think it will be great fun analyzing, dissecting, deconstructing this photo. Have at it!

The photo reminds me of a mid '50's Norman Rockwell painting if he accidentally brushed against it while it was still wet. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if I had taken it, I would delete it without a second thought! Just my opinion.

I usually carry my camera via peak design clip on my backpack strap: away from the midline as camera (especially with longer lens) in midline would obstruct my view of feet and ground (and short 5'4").
Recently in the Page AZ slot canyons I was presented with the problem that they did not allow backpacks (even empty). I ended up using my old carrying strap (using Peak Design anchor links I had for back-up) but was not happy. Also tried the clip on my belt, but it hangs too low and sticks out with danger of baking up the camera.

I have seen recent posts of different solutions (Move and Cotton Carrier) with the original slot replaced with a Peak design clip, but these place the camera+lens in midline.

My question for UHH: is there such a strap where the clip ends up away from the midline?

what about a fishing vest? They usually have D rings off center; attach with a spring clip.

I especially recommend Bryce, GCNP, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches, and Mesa Verde. Good thing is they are all close to each other and in a row.

A road trip from San Antonio, Tx to Glacier National Park then to Portland,Or. looking for places to stop and shot wildlife and landscape. Any hidden places would be great. No long hikes. Then Portland down to north rim GCNP and the arch’s area
Thank y’all
Ron

how much time do you have? What are you driving? Just looking at a Rand McNally Road Atlas you could make a nice loop going thru Denver, RMNP, west to Dinosaur Natl.Mon., then up thru the Tetons, Yellowstone, to Glacier. Return via Portland to the Oregon coast, then south along the coast, inland to Crater Lake, down along the Sierras to Reno and Lake Tahoe, east on US 50 to Lehman Cave, Great Basin NP, to Bryce Canyon NP, then south to GCNP North Rim. Then thru Monument Valley to Canyonlands and Arches, east to Mesa Verde NP, Taos, Santa Fe, White Sands NP, Carlsbad Caverns NP, then home. So many nice places you should see; I've been to all except Taos, White Sands, and Carlsbad, and all are worth the time it takes to visit. Shouldn't take more than a couple months and $10k for gasoline.

I'm not familiar with the 1DX and "pattern metering;" where is the pattern set to and what is it metering?

I've seen slime molds before, but never any that looked like that. I like Photo 3; any idea how many years ago that area burned?

My first digital camera was one of the Kodak point and shoots in 2003-2004. Something like $260 I believe. I used it to photograph breeding livestock then email the image to the potential customer. About the same time we got a Sony Mavica at work with its floppy disk that would hold an astounding 6 images! I think it was like $700! 2006 i upgraded to a Fuji S5100. Cool camera but slow focusing made it useless for anything moving. For Christmas 2007 my kids gave me a Nikon D40. $450-475 I think. That’s when I found that digital cameras could actually be competent devices.

my first digital camera was an Olympus D-400z; I believe I got it around 1998; don't remember what it cost, but I justified it because I could use it at work. 1.3 megapixel, 3X optical zoom. It takes 4 AA batteries and has a 32MB Smart Media card in it, and it still works.

Recently I have been going through some of my photos…one thing I have noticed is a large percentage of my photos tilt to the right. That is slant down from left to right. Not a lot, just enough to be annoying.

Does anyone else have this problem. Is there a reason this happens so often. When I am looking thru the viewfinder I don’t notice the tilt.

What are your thoughts on this

Chuck

I have that problem on occasion if I'm in a hurry, and it seems it's always a tilt down to the right, probably from the way I hold the camera. I correct it in PP. On cameras with built-in level or artificial horizon, I always keep it on and use it; it helps.

"In short, the experience in these parks is totally ruined by overcrowding. I know I'll be castigated by others for the following statement but "I feel our more popular national parks in our country should be limited to access by American citizens ONLY." Then they will be at least a bit more enjoyable."[/quote]

Better to require reservations from everyone and limit the amount of time they can visit during the most overcrowded times. Limit campers to one week per year to reduce the number of people from nearby areas from coming back every time they want a weekend camping trip. Then prohibit private vehicles in the most crowded areas like is done in Zion. Limit traffic to shuttle buses and bicycles. Someone could set up a franchise system to rent out electric bikes and make a fortune.

Working on a trip. If I could go to only one, would you recommend Yosemite or Glacier National Park?
Thanks,

I've been to both and both are spectacular; both are also overcrowded during prime seasons. Much would depend on whether you are driving, flying in and renting a vehicle, taking a group tour, etc. You can't go wrong with either one, but my personal preference is Glacier. But I drive my own 4wd and prefer to camp, and Glacier offers much more there than Yosemite.

Hello Hoggers,

I'm wondering how many change the camera time setting to Daylight Savings vs just leaving it in standard time?

I always change the clocks in the house including on the microwave and coffeepot. I change the others as I come to them; just changed the clock in the car today. I change the cameras when I use them. I like to know what time it is; it is inconsiderate to make others wait for you if you have an agreed meeting time.

when I log onto UHH on my desktop PC, the UHH for the day is different than what appears on my iPhone ?

"Upcoming Topics" changes throughout the day. I see it every day on my PC when I log back on after being off for a couple hours. Some of what were Upcoming Topics are moved under other headings, I guess because they got a lot of responses.
