What do you think about measuring tools that are marked in both metric and SAE? I like them, and I seek them out. In many cases, I use the metric scale because it's easier to get accurate measurements. Several months ago, a YouTuber railed against them. "What do I need metric for? This is America?"

I bought a set of three tape measures marked in both scales. They come in very handy.

The SI system is actually the official system in the US. It is used practically everywhere except everyday activities,
science, auto industry, pharmaceuticals, medicine, and others.

One of the main reasons I hear, apart from "this is America, and we don't do stuff like that!" is that it's too hard for old people to adapt, that is not only insulting and also BS.

As a new Zealander I was still there when we started towards the moving from imperial to metric and the poor old people problem was used then as well. I've been living in the US for a couple decades, so I still think imperial, but buy the time my mother died a short time back at 90, she had trouble with imperial, so when I talked with her, I had to convert on the fly everything from US imperial to metric.

For a profit obsessed country, it seems silly to me to have to make two of everything, one for the home market in inches and one for the rest of the world in millimetres.

Last night, I watched "2010," a movie released in 1984. It's about a Russian/US mission to the 2001 spacecraft orbiting Jupiter. There are a lot of familiar, younger faces in the cast. The movie explains some of the mystery surrounding "2001..." Keir Dullae was in it as both a young and an old man. You can see a young Helen Mirren speaking Russian. I saw it on HBOMax, but it might be available elsewhere.

The book was way better. Didn't have that stupid tension between the US and Russia, it was the Chinese that caused trouble by having to be first back to Jupiter. They burned all their fuel on the outward trip and had to refuel on Europa there by creating the tension. Still a pretty good movie tho'

MS decided on Friday that my little work laptop was ready, so I let them have at it.
The thing is MS has been spending a lot of energy mentioning hardware requirements. I have three machines I use, One is my primary, Dell 15 in Esperion 7000 series maxed out, 2 yrs old, MS says OK. One a Lenovo Mixx 720 tablet, maxed out, 4 yrs old, MS says no deal.

And this is the one I find odd, third machine is a Lenovo 11in laptop I use at work next to my lathe, Celeron processor, 4 gb ram, basic low end $120 machine from Best Buy about 2 yrs ago. It was updated to W11 Friday, took about 3 hrs.
Only one problem, Eclipse, my java programming app wouldn't run any thing I'd written, said the compile was a newer version. Was a relatively easy fix.

So far except for the new interface, which is not that different, I see nothing to worry about

Sad to say, it is not inevitable. The first few gas stations that made the switch suffered huge drop in business and had to switch back. So it will not happen in commerce, and this unruly nation will never accept it by governmental decree.

for a country that obsesses over business profits I find it strange that the US hasn't gone metric. Building two of many things, one for 'mericans and one for export just can't be that profitable.

and let me tell you the old meme that the elderly can't do it is BS, I'm a born and raised New Zealander, been living in the US for quite some time and when I talked to my mother, who died a couple of yrs back just short of 90, I had to talk to her in metric, km kg etc. she had forgotten how to think imperial.

The US just has to get over it's self and switch.

You have countries that use the metric system and then you have countries that have been to the moon.

While it may be factual that has got to be one of the stupidest "we're better than anybody else" comments I've read for a while.

The metric system is far superior to the imperial system and is used by almost everybody except the USA.

A month ago a lady in Lakeland Florida sideswiped me (her fault) totaled my 1999 Boxster (986) Last Sunday I purchased this 911 (991) 2013.

My wife and I absolutely enjoy it.

Must be something in the air, I had a similar experience also about a month ago. Twice in the same day, on the way to work and on the way home, some defective entity just had to be in front approaching a left turn light and hit me, second time hard enough to total me.
Wasn't as classy a ride as you, just my old '97, reliable, seen better days Nissan pickup. Thanks to insurance I now have a '06 Acura TSX. I think I came out ahead.
Interestingly this is not the first time I've been totaled like this, but I always seem better off vehicle wise. A few more and maybe I'll work my way up to a Boxster. Think the insurance company would notice

As I'm my approaching old fart birthday is in a few days, that would be 70, the Mrs. and step kids decided o get be a new body and lens. I've been an Olympus fan for quite some time and my current setup is E3 plus 12-60 & 50-200 lenses. They got me the OM-D E mk3 with 14-150 lens.
Haven't been that active for quite some time, that'll change soon. Aside from sill working full time, I've been teaching myself java/android studio to build an app that is related to my business, job shop prototype machining.
Almost done with that, and there are a bunch of things photo related I'd like explore.

Happy healthy new year to all

Read some history and you will see, if not agree, with the genius of our founders who created our Constitution. They were much smarter than those who would undo their genius. It takes 2/3 of both houses of Congress to send an Ammendment to the States, and approval by 3/4 of the States to approve. Since over 3/4 of the States are smaller than average population they would lose by approving. So don’t waste your fingers. It isn’t going to happen.

As a resident of a smaller (and predictably Red) State I am thankfull to not allow the big city urbanites to rule the rest of us.

So, rather than majority vote being the norm you would rather have minority vote be the norm?
Rather than the Tyranny of the masses you'd rather have the tyranny of the minority. Mitch McConnel for instance

I often encounter those idiots when driving.

I have a phrase for that, Turning your indicators on after you start the turn is like taking your pants down after you start to shit, it's already too late.

One of my primary peeves while driving is what I call gotta be infronters! the lane is merging, accelerate, my off ramp is approaching, but I've sill got 2 car lengths before I have to force my way across 2+ lanes. I am willing to kill just to be in front of you.

Also, on the road, tailgaters bug me, the the ones that scare me are the heavies, lorries and buses and semi's
I doubt that there 1 in a 1000 of these "professional" drivers that has any concept of the stopping distance of these vehicles , under optimum conditions about 4 -5 times the cars around them
