I mainly use my 18-140mm or 35mm on my D7100 for my primary "walking around lens(es)" depending on what I am shooting and lighting conditions. If I want to go minimal I take the 18-55mm lens. I get very good pictures but find I really need the VR the 18-55 and 18-140 provide. If I can improve my technique I might be able to appreciate and use to full potential better glass. I also have a Canon G9 that I still love (solid build - great IQ - terrible in low light) I take when biking. It's all situational and (lack of) skill/technique driven for me.

I had a 2004 Jeep Liberty with 140,000 miles on it when the check engine light (CEL) went on. Car had been excellent (other than gas mileage) since I purchased it new with no issues other than wear/tear/regular maintenance. And was in very good condition. I took it to my local mechanic who does all my work and asked him to tell me what was throwing the code (no cost - pays to use local talent). He hooked up his SnapOn analyzer and said it was a transmission code. He tried and reset the computer 3 times - CEL came back on immediately on car start-up. I did not want to invest $2000+ to drop and open trans and inspect, determine issue and then repair a 13 year old car. I was forced to sell because you can't register a car in NY unless it passes inspection. I had three weeks until inspection expired. A CEL is a show stopper. I sold the Jeep to a farmer who continues to drive it on his farm having added around an additional 12,000 miles. I took the cash and bought my new Subaru!

SOP on Navy ships is that the CO writes "Night Orders" instructing the OOD to do specific things during the evening watches. One common action item that all CO's I ever had put in their "Night Orders" is for the evening OOD's to alert them (get the CO up and notify him/her) if any ship comes within a certain CPA (closest point of approach). This is typically 2000yds (a nautical mile) or greater - depending on the confidence the CO has in his OOD's and intensity of local shipping traffic. That the CO was in his bunk when the USS Fitzgerald was hit and not on the bridge is very strange and implies to me that the OOD/Bridge team may have screwed up. On watch would have been the Port/Stbd/aft lookouts, junior OOD, OOD, quartermaster, helmsman, lee helmsman. Doesn't matter what the ASX Crystal did. These gas turbine powered ships are like race cars. I don't get it.

I have been using ezpass here in NY since it was available 20+ years ago in Rockland County when rfid technology was uncommon. It was a good deal at that time in that it offered a reduced toll charge and a way to avoid a long wait. The downside has always been that big brother has a record of where you have been at all times (not an issue for me!) - take a look at your ezpass statements.

I recently bought a used NEX-5N with the 18-55 lens as a complement to my D7100 and replace a G9 that was stolen a few years ago). I paid $150 and love it for grab and go use. So much capability in a tiny form factor. Unfortunately I got GAS and bought a refurbished 55-210 from KEH (that looks and works like new). A ton of fun. Great IQ. Only regret is lack of EVF sometimes makes it difficult to use bright light. Low price point made my pull the trigger to buy. Worth every nickel.

I have been upgrading my families MACs for years using the upgrade kits sold by Macsales / Other World Computing. I have installed solid state drives, memory and fans in laptops to keep them running like new. As long as I can update the OS I feel it is worth it to spend a few dollars to keep my MACs running. If you do it yourself you can save quite a bit of money - and OWC sells kits that are self explanatory. Here is a link to their site.
