Hi Carol,

The 55-300 is a little smaller and lighter. I have one and recently got the 70-300 for work. I haven't shot the 70-300 enough, especially in good conditions to say it's better, but it generally accepted to be.

I tried two copies of the Tamron lens. I returned the first because the color rendition wasn't as good as Nikon's and the second had a bad focus mechanism.

I'd go with the 70-300 if budget allows, but the 55-300 is a good lens. Here are some shots from the 55-300 using a D7100 both at 300mm.

RedBeard, I'd like to have more reach like you do; but can barely handle what I have. Miss lots of shots by being too slow, ha!

Our suet has been disappearing overnight too.
So I've been taking the feeder inside at night,
until the coon appeared during daylight.
Mystery solved!

Thanks, Dave.
I share your view of fishing!
Not ice-fishing though!

We'll have the .22 ready now.
Don't want coons, groundhogs, nor squirrels
in nor under our outbuildings!
Coon may not be welcome in my wife's kitchen either, ha!
She would probably bake it alright if twere all prepared;
but I can find better things to do with my time, ha!

We're snowed-in.
Wildlife coming in to eat!
Raccoons are NOT welcome here.
Yelling didn't disturb him/her much!

Just purchased a new Nikon 55-300 at a very good price. However, having some second thoughts. I have used the search here on UHH but didn't find anything that helped much. Google searches are what gave me second thoughts but I would like the opinion of users here on UHH.

The lens will be used on DX cameras (d5300 and d7100) and would be primarily for landscape and wildlife type shots probably in the 200 to 300mm range.

Can anyone give advice as to whether to keep this lens or look into trading up to the 70-300? Your experience with either or both would be very helpful. It is still in the box at this point.

I use my camera mainly for baseball.
But being snowed-in now, it is a good time
to watch thru the kitchen window for wildlife coming in to feed.
Will attach samples taken with my 70-300VRII on d5200.
The baseball pic is probably from over 340 feet.
Tho 74yo & somewhat weakened by leukemia,
I can handle the weight of the lens OK to follow baseball action.
Got a 70-200/2.8 for night baseball; it's noticeably heavier for me.

Yes, I confess, Corolyn. Me again. Found more of the milkweed pods to match those I sent previously. Kept some for ourselves. We don't have any luck with plants in our (full-shade) woods; but keep trying. Good luck to both of us!
