Great photos. Amazing detail. But what is the bump at 3:00 o'clock?

Active Region 3590 had just gone off the right edge of the sun in this location. It was a huge sunspot and I suspect it was the cause of the 'bump'.

It was indeed a great trip and the RX10 IV wasn't a burden to carry around.

Hello all,

I'm off to Iceland in a few weeks. I was wondering from anyone who has gone in the past, what focal length they found most useful. I realize much has to do with your subject matter and style of photography, but in your opinion what's the widest and longest focal length actually needed for mostly landscapes. Let's not worry about puffins and whale watching, since I realize that's longer focal lengths, but I'm speaking mostly for landscapes.

I know I'm taking a 24-120. I'm likely taking a 20mm prime. I'd deciding between a 50mm prime or a 70-300.
I'm not sure I have room in the bag for both. I'm taking 2 camera bodies as well. I'm trying to keep the weight down somewhat.

thanks
Mike
Hello all, br br I'm off to Iceland in a few week... (show quote)

I toured Iceland with a Sony RX10 IV with its excellent 24-600mm zoom lens. Covered everything from wide landscapes to those Puffins and Whales.

Love the timelaspe! I got to see a quick glimps at almost max but it was so cloudy that you didn't even need to glasses. Our max was about the same as yours.

In Montana you would have gained an extra degree (or so) of coverage...

Shot the solar eclipse from my deck in Bergen Alberta.

Stunning! Iā€™m always in awe seeing these.

The real 'awe' is seeing a full sky Aurora where it just seems to crackle overhead.

After playing with Comet Pons-Brooks I shot three other stellar targets; however, due to problems getting a new guiding system to work I lost two sessions. Finally I just went back to my normal approach and shot the Beehive Star Cluster.

Used a Sony A7R V and Astro-Tech 65 EDQ on an Evolution mount. Shot 75x15sec subs @ ISO6400.

As per my normal, aligned and stacked in PixInsight, postprocessed in Lightroom/Photoshop.

Enjoy!

Finally had a relatively clear western horizon immediately after sunset.

Fired up the Sony A7R V and Astro-Tech 65 EDQ on an Evolution mount and captured some subs. Shot 36x15sec subs @ ISO6400.

Shooting almost horizontal through the Earth's atmosphere gives some weird ripples...

Enjoy!

Actually, the longest used storage medium seems to be punch cards. They were invented in 1801 to control Jacquard looms in textile factories. They were used in their most familiar form for data sorting by businesses in the early 1900s. We used them in the late '60s for computer programs. Maybe a bit in the early '70s, but that's probably about it.

I well remember punch cards. I used an early IBM computer and punch cards in the computing for my M.Sc. degree. The going prank was to shuttle a person's deck of cards and when you have several thousand cards it was not an easy task to get them back in the proper order.

It took only minutes for the conspiracy nuts to get going about the NJ/NY earthquake yesterday. I'm glad I finally experienced an earthquake, though. Every time I was in CA, I hoped that I would feel at least a tremor.

If you have to wonder why the world is in such a mess, it simple. Human beings are in charge. People are idiots! Look at how worked up people got over a tremor.

I need some advice as to what hardware to acquire to provide a viable long-term, external photo file storage solution. To date I have relied on my 1Tb Mac hard drive, but ..... is it time for a change.

I am not a professional and never will be, but I do enjoy this "sport" and hope to stay active with it.

Type/size of external drive?

Any Adobe Lightroom-specific considerations other than the need for a reasonable data transfer to/from speeds?

I use an external storage device called Wavlink which allows me to easily use any existing unhoused HD or SSD for backup or standalone cloning. Works like a charm for any of my numerous 1TB thru 12TB drives.
