Three of the greatest guitarists ever. Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I'd add to that Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Gary Moore, Buddy Guy, and Carlos Santana. To name but a few of the many great guitarists.

Please add my vote of Don Henley At a State fair I had tickets to the Dobbie Brothers concert and Don Henley was tunning up with Hotel California (Eagles) and he opened for the Doobie Brothers. Stevie Ray Vaughan was exceptional in my book.

It's a rigid bureaucracy that refuses to change and Congress does not have the will to help it make it and would rather private businesses take over. It seems that there are two post office services, one that delivers to my house, on time, dry, in good shape mail and packages 7 days a week, and the local mail post office that seems to bungle along.

I do like the online feature that shows what mail you are getting. That works well as long as the mail is delivered but if reported missing I never hear anything back from the post office.

Let's not forget some utilities, phone companies, and cable providers who have become so big they can't keep track and provide horrible customer service because they are typically the sole provider of the service and they can charge what they want and don't have to provide great customer service.

One of my first cameras was a Kodak box camera with 120 films in it. It was a used camera that came from a thrift store. About manuals, they are usually only a few pages long now but written in so many languages that its become a book. Some people are content to point and shoot much like our phone cameras while others learn or take classes to be able to use their cameras. Some people are content with the manual typewriter and if we had not moved forward we would not be having this conversation or post. Typewriters were what you typed is what you got much like cameras back in the day. The typewriter if you made a mistake you tried to correct it but they never perfected the autocorrect and whiteout had its limits. Photography was definitely harder and unforgiving. Thankfully we have camera systems that produce RAW that can be saved and converted to usable pictures. The coming of AI in processing has expanded our artistic and technical skills. Who remembers the early Microsoft or other companies paint programs moving pixels around the screen and changing colors? Although things have become more complex what we can do more is short of amazing and will continue.

Most manuals come in PDF format and we can search, and print parts of a manual that we need on a computer or phone. We now have the ability to take a picture and sometimes have the time to retake or have had the ability and equipment to have taken multiple pictures in short order to have captured the one or few that turned out great.

Analog versus digital, early cameras were analog because there were no electronics involved only mechanical. I would think when cameras started using electronics as a part of their system they no longer were analog.

We are talking about two different things. Tools in themselves can not think, or be artistic and a tool in the hands of a mechanic or artist is different. The issue I see is that when we use AI as a mechanic or Artist, Musician, Photographer, Designer, and so forth we have issues. I think that some people feel threatened, jealous, and unsettled because we have not had to deal with AI in the past. The AI that we have access to currently is in the infant stage and I don't know what is out there that perhaps is classified or not available to the public. Most are not threatened or jealous of software programs because we use them to assist us. No one thinks that a writer is not doing the work of writing a book by using a computer and software but editing will become much easier with AI. Technical writing writers have or are much closer to AI than most would imagine. All of us use material written by technical writers, manuals, and instructional literature that is tough to follow and AI will help us by producing material that is more readable and useable. Most recently the use of telework has caused panic and fear among people, cities, counties, states our federal government because some are threatened by new technology. A lot of people of all ages have embraced this technology along with other that is becoming commonplace.

One of my favorite remembrances is the laws that were passed in the US making an effort to limit automobiles and keep horses, and carriages alive in the US. Very few people are still alive while that was going on and don't give it a thought today. There are many of us that remember manual typewriters and I was so thankful when computers came along, it was a slow start but we got there.

X-Rays used to be taken and recorded on film and now a digital image and the younger folks won't remember. The new process is much quicker and can be shared. I see this as progress and cell phones are forcing the camera manufacturers to change also even if they (the mfr) are silently kicking and screaming.) Looking at the quality of pictures that cell phones produce with the tiny lenses and the tiny chip makes cameras look bad (we can't have that.) Part of the reason that cell phones are able to do what they do is because their phones use an operating system that is more robust much like the difference between a PLC Programmable logic controller and a computer, tablet or smartphone. Smartphones and tablets are still more limited than a laptop or desktops but they are getting smarter. Some people are afraid of AI afraid it may mimic the destructive, angry, hateful part of people and don't see the positive attributes of many people and its programming.

The battle between general purpose and dedicated processors and systems has been going on for 50 years that I can speak to. From what I see, it is no closer to resolution than when I first learned about it. Even after PCs were fanned out to desktops, IT groups worked to recentralize the functionality and control. This is just another iteration of one corner of the question.

It's not worth getting your blood pressure elevated over.

I agree it's not worth elevating our blood pressure. The biggest change I see is the debate over AI and what it can or can't do and for the moment it's relegated to single-purpose software as a chatbot or data text only.

There is a saying in product development “never build what you can buy”!

Manufacturers have their programs but but adopting a common operating system could save money and also facilitate downloading of Apps to the camera and sharing via Wi-Fi or cellular.

Of course we will then have to worry about viruses and other malware on our cameras.

So time will tell how well it will sell.

I have malware bytes installed on my Windows 11 system and Windows itself has become much better with viruses and other knarlies that roam the net. So that would be another device that needs to be protected. I wonder sometimes why a priority of our secret squirrel governmental agencies do go after those who prey on us. Spam, phishing, and hacking, for profit, hurts general, organizations and governmental entities at a huge cost.

That's because they grew up with smartphones. An appliance that does everything.

I am in the older generation. I grew up (to the extent that I HAVE grown up) with a typewriter so I am keyboard oriented. Younger generations are oriented toward trackpads (which I find difficult). The appliance makes the (wo)man.

That's where I learned to type long before home computers were available. Many Camera models use touch screens along with specific buttons. My first SLR was a Canon in the early 70ties my earlier Kodac cameras had no electronics and were strictly manual although my first digital camera used a 3 1/4 disk to store photos on. PLC's programmable logic controllers have been around since the sixties but their use is limited they be programmed in the field and I don't think that cameras can. I think that the next logical step for cameras is a standard operating system so 3rd party apps will be developed for cameras. As others have said time will tell.

Cameras still "boot" on turn on.
They are fast because the OS is so simple.
Many call it "startup".

Yes, but it is machine/equipment/device-specific, third-party apps can not be used. The simple part limits the flexibility of the camera.

If you want to take photos with a computer OS, most any smartphone will do that and allow you to use various apps. I think DSLR (or maybe ML) cameras do a better job, primarily because of the larger sensor. But they're a lot bulkier than a smartphone. Do you really want to use your camera to browse the internet or look at the weather report or write letters or emails? For computer use, I really depend on a keyboard and I find typing on a smartphone less than satisfying. I'd rather carry my laptop.

It's not about being able to browse it's about the 3rd party apps that can be added or that the MFR can easily add to the camera which is not possible now. Many things a phone camera can do is related to the operating system not the lense which are typically very small.

Does any camera allow or give the option in auto to set a range of ISO? I see an possible advantage to limit noise.

I am hearing rumblings that Sony is working on a camera that uses an Android operating system, Windows???, IOS. On another post a question was asked will the unit have to boot? I imagine that cameras like Win-11 can go to sleep and start right back up without a boot. I can see the advantages of the camera being able to use third-party apps if the camera manufacturer allows it. Right now if you have an Apple phone or other you need to go to Apple to download it. Same Microsoft, and Google downloads Android apps. It will be interesting to see if the MFRs give the choice of operating systems to the consumer. For it is a nuisance to have Win-11 set up to emulate Android phone apps and I don't know if Apple will do the same. The ability to share files and use apps is very appealing. What do you think?
