Maybe I’m nitpicking, but I have to ask, why do so many people feel they have to apologize or try to justify taking and posting a photo taken with a smartphone camera? There have been some absolutely beautiful images posted on UHH that were taken with smartphones. So why not post a smartphone photo and be proud of it? No need to apologize.

While I do see what you are getting at I would be more likely to apologize about using a flagship or high end camera (in some situation where the camera needs to be mentioned at all).

My theory is that it is an automatic self-protective, anticipatory response to stave off being castigated by some of the less-than-diplomatic purists on this board. Just saying.

Absolutely!!!

So I took it with a cell phone.... If someone doesn't like it, that's their problem!

The best camera is the one you have with you. A bit if a cliche, but often true.

Big issue, IMHO, is that UHH has so many sections that the SmartPhone section gets lost in the weeds. We might need to have a way that special sections randomly get showcased at the top of the normally populated sections. This would only need a single line with a link to the chosen section. I had to scroll pretty far down a long list to find the link to the SmartPhone section.

Wingpilot, you are not nitpicking, to are participating.

It would be helpful if there was a Link at the top of the opening page that could take you to a list of special sections which could be listed alphabetically. I know I am going to get flamed by the "experts" for not knowing how "simple it is to find the special sections" It sure isn't simple for my aging brain.

We have had that for awhile, sometimes at the top, sometimes other areas. I guess not prominent enough?

The "self-protective" pre-emptive disclaimer being a function of the rigidity - nothing to do with purity - of many UHH members.

Wingpilot, my nitpick is those who boast their photo is "straight out of camera," as if all those camera settings that gave them the result are somehow superior to developing the digital negative to one's own vision.

On UHH we just have to live with the narrow-mindedness, though hanging out in your favorite volunteer-managed sections with your peeps is certainly an option

I think with so much 'stuff' on each page a small message would go unnoticed. A banner at the top of a page with flashing lights might get a little attention.

SOME photography folks are too preoccupied with or enamored by equipment, some are even addicted to continual changing-up, up-grading, or collecting copious quantities of gear. They form "cults" and go to verbal combat regarding gear. When they are dissatisfied with their photograhic results they buy more gear rather than try to improve their technique. The culture leads to snobbery and one-upmanship-" My camer is better than yours" and "You aren't a REAL PHOTOGRAPHER, because you use a cellphone camera..nah- nana- nah nah Pure childishness!

Thereis a time, a place, and a usage for any functioning camera. A good photographer with a cell phone will produce a better and possibly more artful image that an inept photographer with a state-of-the-art lates and greatest model.

Critiquing photographs and giving constructive advice are good and helpful but don't knock the guy's camera. Most photographers know the advantages and limitations of any camera. Someties they just have to work with what they have and work around the pitfalls.
