I have a post running titled "Nikon Help Needed". This post asked for suggestions on buying a new Nikon camera. With all the help I received I ordered a new camera Sunday morning. I got a call this morning saying it would be delivered tomorrow. It just arrived a day early and I decided that getting a new camera is a special occasion.
I opened the large box and first unpacked the accessories that came with the camera. Next, I took out the camera box and put it on the table. I then opened a bottle of single malt 12 year old scotch, poured myself a glass, sat in the living room and began the opening process; which I am doing as I write this topic. First I want to say thank you to all the people who helped with camera selection comments on my initial post and secondly I wanted to hear if others have an interesting unpacking ritual.

For your needs, I think the D7200 is even better than the D7500. Enjoy!!

A lightweight yet sturdy tripod might be a good investment, esp. for slower shutter speeds. It would c lame in hand when shooting some low-light landscapes and also with portraits.

Thank you for your comments. Tripods are something I have plenty of.

I want to thank everyone contributing to this thread. I also want to offer some conclusion to all the constructive comments made.
I am going on a trip beginning on the first of April and I have wanted to have a new camera to take with me. I really couldn't pull the trigger on the D750 and I couldn't afford a new D500 so after a number of comparisons I decided to do the following:
I bought a new D7200 from B&H this morning for $696.95 with accessories thrown in. I believe the D7200 was a great value and looking on line I realized it produced exceptional photographs. Not as good but certainly in line with the D750; and clearly a lot better then my D7000. I also believe the D7200 is similar enough with the D7000 that I can figure it out before April.
I hope to save my money and be back here in about a year with enough money to decide between a D500 and a great full frame Nikon and at that time I will have the D7200 as an exceptional backup. Meanwhile I can continue to take exciting photographs and improve my skills.
Again, thanks to everyone who helped in this journey. I hope that even though I didn't end up with either camera mentioned in my initial post your comments were not wasted. I would appreciate any and all comments on this decision.

The D500 should be more than sufficient, and, if you compare Nikon specifications, is second only to the D5 in low light capability. Since you are not shooting sports or fast moving birds, etc., you can save some money by going with the D7500. It has the same Expeed 5 processor and low light capability as the D500, but does not have the same fast focal system as the D500, which would not be needed for landscapes and portraits. My daughter has one and also uses it for sports. The D500 was just out of the budget.

I shoot mostly landscape and portraits. Lots of travel photography.

If you chose #2 would you really "GIVE" the d7000+lens away. I am looking to move up slowly. i have a D3200. would not mind jumping to a 7xxx series first before anything else. (like a D500) thank you, rich.
ps. like my 18-300 so 18-140 not nessesary but wouldnt mind also. thank you again.

Sorry. I had a person here in town in mind. However, I may wait.

I'm surprised you are not keeping the 18-140, it covers the most common range of focal lengths.

There is little advantage to a FX over a DX. It is mostly low light performance.
The advantage of DX is lighter, smaller, less expensive, larger selection of lenses, greater reach and for wide angle, can use wide angle lenses that are not compatible with FX.

Keep in mind, if you consider using the D750 in "DX mode" unless there is some magic I don't know of, you will be cutting out more than 1/2 of the pixels; 1/(1.5*1.5) = 0.44.

Neither landscape nor portrait photography is usually done in lowlight.

It seems for your use the D500 is the better choice.

I was going to give my D7000 away. But I think I will keep it for a back up for now. Therefore, I will keep the DX Lenses.

I bought a D750 in January of this year, and so far, I am loving it. I still have and use my D7100, and I still love it as well :-). The D750 is very similar with the controls. It could be a placebo effect, but I think it does have somewhat better image quality, based on some early morning duck/geese shots at my local pond and a recent indoor dance contest, than I've historically had with my D7100 using a FF 70-300mm F/5.6 . I originally bought it refurbished through Adorama for $1,150.00, but the display quit working during a shelter pet shoot during the 2nd week I had it, and I had to return it. Nikon then dropped the price, and I picked it up new one for $1,296.00. So far, the new one has been flawless. I've been very happy with my d7100, and so far so good with the D750.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I have read about sensor density, pixel size and sensor element size but to be honest I get somewhat lost in the details.
I have thought about the D7200, but since this is likely my last camera I wanted something different to peak my interest. The D750 for the full frame concept and the D500 Pro level build and technology.
Also, thank you jerryc41 for the links.

What a coincidence but I have done option #2. I bought a d750 for night/astro/landscapes and gave my d7000 to a friend of mine along with the dx lenses.
I <3 my d750.

Did you purchase new?

For the most versatility I would go with the D500. You can never go wrong with a Pro level body!

Thank you for your response. I often read what you have to say. A further consideration is that I cannot afford a new D500. Therefore, the comparison is between a refurbished D500 and a new D750. (approximately the same price). Does that change the equation?
