Not badly spoken for a Yankee. But, that's the "Virginia", Sir.

Two amateur photographers and our wives are headed to Maine in September. It's a coastline trip because we're not hikers or woodlands people. Land in Portland and drive North, that's the plan. Now we have to fill in the gaps of what to do. My previous request about such a trip was bountiful from the Hogs. Please bless me with your personal ideas about Maine.

Photographically, the Down East Coast is filled to the brim with picturesque lighthouses. Get a map.
I could spend 100 years in and around Acadia NP. Be a tourist and hit the high points.
Sea towns. I grew up in one. Love them. If you do too, enjoy!
PixelStan is right. I think they lock you up if you don't try the different Lobster Rolls. I like "Lob Lob", half a Lobster Roll sandwich and a cup of Lobster Bisque.

I'm starting to save for a full frame body. Any thoughts on which way to go? I'm narrowing down to either Nikon 850 or 780. Not really interested in switching to mirrorless.
I'm mostly shooting landscape and also really closeup / macro-ish subjects. My carry around lens is a Tamron 18-400 and just got the 150-600 for my D7200.
If this is covered else on UHH, please post the link.
Thanks!

If you are looking for a "starter" Full Frame, one "to grow on", you almost need to be thinking mirrorless. It pains me to say that. I love my Nikon DSLRs and know that my current gear will last me "to the grave". BUT, the plane-and-simple truth is, camera makers like Nikon are not putting much time, effort, or money into DSLRs. With the whole world "crazy for mirrorless", if they want to make money (duh), they have to "go with the flow" which right now is mirrorless. Will it always be? Who knows. "The future is promised to no one." With the gear they have made to this point, either a D850 or D780 can be a great "system" for another several decades. But there will always be innovations and, at this point, I'd say they will have "mirrorless" stamped on them.

Clouds began to form late this afternoon. Real clouds, I mean; clouds that you could tell were actual clouds, not the vague amalgam of smoke and bad dreams we've recently had. Temperature began to dip, too. It was down to 104 F, and it looked as if there might be rain. And, I knew, it would be cooler still, once out of the valley and a thousand feet higher. And cooler it was, down to a balmy 95 F.

And rain it did. Enough so that for a moment, I actually used my windshield wipers. It was short-lived, though. Over the next several hours, all I saw was virga. Like here, near Merrimack Butte.

Here in the East, virga means "run for cover". In your image over a hardscrabble landscape and "scrub pine", it falls somewhere between "promissory" and a "tease". Sure makes a fantastic photo, though.

I paid $2995 3 months ago from Nikon authorized dealer. I wanted a full frame DSLR that could still be used with all the exiting Nikon lenses and gear that I own. Because I am 82 years old and not in great health the camera and lens is too heavy for me to use hand held. Even with increasing shutter speed I can't avoid camera shake results. My friends in the camera club suggest using a tripod but that just increases the weight and gear I need to carry for casual photography. It was a mistake to buy a 45 mega pixel, full frame camera (no matter great the camera) at my age and ability and expect the camera to overcome my physical problems. I am looking to sell the camera for $2400 with $50 for shipping and insurance. The camera comes, as new, with original box, D850 strap, front cap, charger, battery manual. I think there have been less than 50 shutter activations. If need to discuss I can be reached by phone at (843) 707-9288 or email boblenore@gmail.com

Hi Hedgehogs! I know this subject has been covered in the past and I have tried to absorb as much as I can but I would appreciate someone answering my specific question if possible.

What can I use to copy 35mm & 120 slides to digital using my Nikon D7000? I don't want to remove each slide from its cardboard or plastic frame. I have an old Spiratone Vario-Dupliscope slide copier that worked well with my old FE (which, like a fool I sold) but I don't get full frame on the D7000. I also have a manual 55mm Micro Nikkor and PK-13 auto extension tube. If I bought a Nikon ES-1 copy attachment will I be able to copy the full 35mm frame on the D7000? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a ton of Kodachromes 35mm I would like to copy.

This is a great site and I enjoy reading the posts almost daily even though I'm not a frequent poster. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'm gonna wish you luck. The D7000 is a DX camera. Don't use an FX lens. But/rent/steal a 40mm Macro. I am (still) working on my thousands of slides with my FX Nikon, ES-2, and 60mm Micro. Results have been outstanding but the pace (and my energy/determination) have been lacking of late.

First order of business --- be safe. I met a WW Rafting guide who lives very close to GNP and has never been inside the park. "The Bears have no rules." I carried Bear Spray and wore Bear Bells while walking around with my camera.
Going "next week" doesn't give you much time for research. Good stuff at each end. Lake McDonald in the west, St. Mary Lake in the east. Logan Pass/Hidden Lake Trail. Going-to-the-Sun Road is your friend. Turnouts abound. Many Glacier area for furry friends. And don't forget about Waterton Lakes NP

I have a dilemma. There's no absolute right answer so let's agree to skip that answer. I'm heading to a beautiful place with landscapes and nature. I have (defined by quality) an A camera and a B camera. I have a extreme wide angle and a zoom with a big focal length range. Which lens would you place on which camera? High winds and lots of hiking so switching back and forth isn't a good idea. Thank you.

OK ... I'll play. Use logic. First, do you "prefer" using one camera over the other? That would be my first consideration (tough for me personally. I have 5 DSLRs and I love-and-use them all).
Second, of all the photos you have taken, which of the two "types" of lenses have you used most? I love wildlife photos BUT have far more landscapes. Of the landscapes the ones I tend to enjoy most are of the "sweeping aka wide-angle-view" type.
Therefore I decide what types of images I am "most" hoping to create --- which lens will most likely be used for those images --- and put that lens on the preferential camera. Keep both cameras close and easily accessible and go have a great time.

I was sitting in my living room and noticed through the front door that the outside light appeared orange. I walked out and discovered two things... an emaciated kitten laying in my driveway and a spectacular sunset. There were crows roosting in the neighbors tree and that never happens. I love this sky. Is it possible that you could "Clone-out" the topless palm tree?

Crossing my fingers for you. Of the many trips that I have had cancelled since COVID came to town, one was a trip to Iceland. Getting a refund from Icelandair has proved to be a bit problematic but Hope springs eternal.

UHH currently has forty-eight sections. How many do you support - by way of comments and posted topics?

Linda, photography is a many faceted subject. I admit to being envious of those who are genuinely interested in them all. However I do feel that for any specific aspect of photography that people show an interest in, if a "group leader" can be found who is willing to "ride herd on that section", the rest of us can appreciate their commitment without necessarily feeling compelled to frequent a section/sections in which we personally have no interest.
I am not a birder, but I am especially happy that those with that interest have a spot here on the net where they can share that interest with other like-minded souls.
Still Life photography only very rarely "grabs me", but when such a shot does, it pulls strongly on my heart strings. Chances are that I will not frequent a section giving instruction on that subject. But for those rare and magical times when a particular Still Life image moves me, I hope that interested folks can find a spot where they can learn how to stage beautiful subjects in that field.
Similarly I have noticed a large and growing portion of our community who seem to fancy travel and the images that can be created in doing so. I do think that Hip Coyote's idea would gain traction with the members if a good leader might be found. OTHERWISE, the Main Discussion Section should be open to our members finding help with their travel plans.

A very "Hip" suggestion, I think. For those of us who would like to see as much as we can while we are here and not waste time on "ugly stuff".
