As photographers, most of us strive to get pleasing catchlights in the eyes of our subjects. A friend of mine who sometimes helps out as a second shooter, was asking about round vs. square catch lights.
Personally, I use octoboxes, umbrellas, or brolly boxes, depending on where I'm shooting, and which lighting setup I'm using (we have 4 to choose from, and it depends on who gets what lights first) Anyway, he asked why people comment on the nice round catchlights, and why do we care if they are rectangular or round?
He had a point, window light is rectangular, most standard softboxes are rectangular, but it seems that most people are trying for the round catchlights.
Here's the question, is it just that round is what is "in" or is there some other reason why you like/don't like round vs. square catchlights?
Frankly, I just use round modifiers, because it is what I've always used. I'm not sure I could answer WHY one is better?
