Back in 2014 I was privileged to partner with Wildlife Rescue - South Coast (WR-SC) as the photographer as part of a fund raising venture. WR-SC is an amazing group of dedicated volunteers located on the south coast of New South Wales (Australia) who rescue not only birds, but all species of injured Australian wildlife.

Many bird injuries result from collisions with wire fences and power lines though most result from vehicle strikes. Though unsure, WR-SC members suspect this bird flew into a wire fence whilst night hunting. This captive bird was in rehab when I was invited to photograph it. I found it perched in a shaft of bright sunlight in the rear of an otherwise deeply shaded area of a large enclosure. Though not all animals and birds survive, this Boobook was lucky - soon after I captured this image it had recovered sufficiently to be released back to the wild for a second chance at life.

Warren, Excellent photo and I love that it is B&W.

Thanks Greg. I personally feel that B&W often adds intensity and drama to an image if suitable. In this case I felt that the snarling was dramatic and so B&W it is!! Again - thanks.

Thanks Dick. I was lucky to catch these guys when I visited Sabi Sands in South Africa. (2017)

Nice! That is one reason people don't keep Hyenas as pets.

Mike, Thanks for your comment. BTW I notice in the small print that you have a Spotmatic. I expect it is an Asahi Pentax.... I have one as well - still like new in its leather case. I bought it way back in 1967 when I was posted to Singapore with the Australian Army. It still works a treat.

Again thanks

A previous post showed a Hyena pup being cute. However, like most predatory animals, practicing hunting and killing skills need to start early in life. These little guys are 'playing' at this stage, however it won't be long before it all becomes very serious. Hit 'Download' and check out the faces.

What a stunning shot,Warren! I've never seen a little one (pup?) before. So cute, and heartwarming! I realize they are wild and will not stay "cute" for very long...
Great detail on download!

Thanks carlysue. They start practicing being wild and un-cute very early in life. When I get a moment, I'll post another image to show what I mean! (What this space)

We came across an enormous abandoned termite mound approximately the size of a small house. Apparently, over many years, the Hyenas had created a labyrinth of inter-connected tunnels and chambers within the mound. There were several lying around soaking up the sun when I was lucky to see this little one at ease snoozing in the warm winter sunlight.

Unique shot, Warren and well done! Without your narrative, I would have thought "owl". I am also amazed at it's small perch...and it's impressive talons!

As always carlysue, I appreciate your looking and comments.

Thanks Earl. I was extraordinarily lucky as this is the first (and only) BSK I've ever seen. And it performed beautifully for the camera in perfect light and at just the right distance for my lens.

That's a great photo!

Thanks Chief - appreciated. As an aside, I expect CPO is short for a navy Chief Petty Officer. If true, I hope addressing you as 'Chief' is not offensive, as our naval guys call CPO 'Chief' as a friendly term all the time. Though not Navy, I retired from the Australian Regular Army (ARA) after 42 years.
